Burglary & Home Security

Beautiful photo, wonderful dog. But I have to ask where that is. Not being nosy, but I want to know who created an epic stone foot way like that!

It looks like a packway

(A cross country route specifically for the use of pack horses. It may not look it, but In their day these were actually major highways)

Just looks like a standard path to stop the ground being eroded by foot traffic. The simonside hills have one running across the middle so does the cheviot. Both to prevent erosion of the peat beneath.

This thread is going a little OT, but they are common all over the North Peak District. The path from Snake Pass to Kinder Scout is like that for a good length, for example.

Wouldn’t dream of it....

One of the only medical assist bungalows that never got burgled when we lived there and not now either due to two main tactics, Dogs and keeping myself to myself, lace curtains, no advertising of wealth.

Dogs are like quite a good deterrent. There is a massive house near the local park where my parent's live, they've got the usual in out driveway you'd expect although they've also got a lower outer fence+hedge in front of the larger inner hedge - the reason for this is so their small pack of dogs can run along the perimeter. My parent's dog hates this pack of dogs for whatever reason and so when ever she's walked past this house she immediately starts barking and within a minute or so the pack has sprinted around and arrives parallel to where we are and then follows us along the length of the hedge along the road barking back.

I suspect that any would be intruder would quite rapidly attract the attention of this pack and make a hasty retreat.

Attack geese are another option. They're better than dogs in some ways. Not only are they noisy, intimidating and vicious they also provide you with tasty meals too.

From memory, it's the path between Shining Tor, and Cats Tor in the Peak district. Just East of Macclesfield, West of Buxton near Errwood Res. Shining Tor is the highest peak in Cheshire. Believe I took the photo on New Year's Eve as I was doing the highest 3 peaks in Cheshire with my trusty companion.

Thanks. Looks lovely!

There's been a police warning for the area I live that burglaries are on the up at the moment. Turns out they are using children to get in through open windows, usually between about 2am and 4am. I've been done twice at my old house so am really paranoid now. Hopefully with a combination of better locks/handles and doors, alarm, CCTV, dog, Hue lights on timers and having worse cars than my neighbours, I don't look as good a target.

Straight out of Oliver Twist. I feel sorry for these kids and how they're likely to grow up.

If you have nice kit, be it computers or other kinds, do not spread the info around, we lived in our little bungalow for almost 15 years and even our next door neighbours didn't know we had 5 computers, 3 consoles and multiple phones.

Very much that. Keep a low profile and don't advertise the fact that your into tech/motorbikes/cars etc
Some houses scream gold mine, his and hers new Audi's on the drive, clearly a small fortune spent on the garden/driveway/house appearance. Yes I know this shouldn't matter, but it does. Locks/alarms/cameras are only going to deter a casual thief, if your house looks like it'll be a good pay off then you aren't stopping them breaking in.

As previous said

3 star euro cylinders minimum on upvc doors
Sash jammers on downstairs windows and patio doors
security film on downstairs windows (Prevents smash and grab)

What handles are recommended for improved security? I need a new one anyway so may as well get one that may make it tougher for someone.

I also need to change the locks but that’s a whole can of worms on this forum !

It doesn't really matter that much.

We've replaced 3 pieces of glass in the last few months (not even a repair company, we're a manufacturer) and in all cases they've just smashed the glass in french doors and walked in.

But anti snap cylinders are still a good idea.

No doubt. But sounds like the only things that will actually stop them are either arrests or violent confrontation. If they've got away with this three times they probably think they're immune to the law. You've probably already said, but you have video cameras? Do your neighbours all have cameras? Perhaps you can get them approaching the house without hoods up or something?

By we I meant our company.
