Hi all,

Currently run GTX970s in SLI and have the option to upgrade to a GTX 1080 for £300.

Have a 2560 x 1440p 60hz screen

At full price Im not sure I would bother but at that price Im more tempted especially as the 970's have the limited Vram.

Not looking to play everything at top settings but would obviously like a boost.

Thoughts?

Did that before my 1080ti. I recall perfect SLI games like crysis were slower but most stuff has a nice boost and even where FPS wasn't hugely increased it just felt smoother.

300 feels a lot though? If you mean net of selling the 970s. If not bargain, do it

Upgrade to the GTX 1080. Will work great at 1440p 60hz and will be able to crank most games and setting's up fine. Will of course get performance all the time compared to the SLI support you need to rely on. No doubt you can sell on the 970's to make up most the price of that 1080 anyways,

300 for the card.

Ill still have the 970's and can move them into two other PCs I have running gtx 770 cards.

At that price, no question, upgrade to the 1080. I had GTX 970s in SLI once, but sold one mainly due to screen tearing I couldn't fix without disabling SLI and the shocking lack of SLI support in Rise of The Tomb Raider at release. Upgrading now also means potentially being able to SLI 1080s further down the line if that's what floats your boat.

Yeah 300 quid for a 1080 is a great price. I run a 1080 at 1440p 60Hz and can pretty much max everything out at that res with frames capped at 60.

Grab the £300 1080, sell a 970 to offset some of the cost, keep the second 970 as a PhysX card for the new Borderlands and Metro games launching next year, win :D

Unless you hate Borderlands/Metro, then just sell the second one too lol.

Sure you would get at least £250 for your GTX 970s ...at £50 the difference would be worthwhile.

Installed the new card, the 1080 got a marginal increase on the 3d Mark test ( the GPU score increasing for 7000 to 7600).

PLayed BFV on Ultra to see what would happen and played ok, the average VRam use was 4.4gb so already over what the 970's could provide.

They're going for less than £100 now in the members market. Ebay you may get slightly more, but you've then got to add in fees.
I always just wait until theres the £1 max selling fee- and got £135 in pocket for a GTX 970 after fees / shipping so can still be worth it by selling smart.

£135 will get you a 980 GTX including delivery in the members market. Ebay shoppers astound me at times with the price they'll pay for outdated tech.

true... but alas.. I'm not quite cool enough to get into the members market yet :D
