Hi,
Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

My PC is currently connected to a 4K Samsung NU8000 49" TV via HDMI and also to a 23" (1080p) monitor via DisplayPort. The TV is about 4 to 5 metres away from the computer.

I am trying to enable HDR on the PC but whenever I enable UHD colour settings on the TV the computer goes into meltdown and starts flickering. I have to turn off UHD to get it back to normal.

I have messed about with all sorts of setting in the Nvidia control panel such as changing refresh rates and colour formats to no gain.

Any ideas how I can get HDR working?

Well looking at benchmarks online the gfx card is certainly capable of running 4k UHD.

What driver are you using?
Tried another HDMI cable?
Tried it with the monitor disconnected?

Have you set the Windows 10 display setting to HDR as below?

I'm using latest Nvidia drivers.
I thought about using a different cable so I'll give that a go.
The problem is still there when I disconnect the monitor.

The only way to get the option of turning HDR on or off is by enabling UHD on the TV. As soon as I do that the screen flickers and I lose the picture.

have you (initially) forced framerate to something low ie 24hz/30hz , to avoid stressing cable ? it might be trying to negotiate 50/60hz

Yep tried that, didn't work. Gonna hopefully move the PC nearer to the TV today in order to try a different cable. Will report back

Well I tried a different HDMI cable and am getting the same issues. I have no idea what the problem is.

Have you got an HDMI cable that actually supports HDR/4K? - I had similar issues with my 1070’s (now have a 1080ti) until I realised the cable I was using was a generic crap jobbie, sourced a new cable (from Argos iirc) and all good ever since.

I have the same problem with my NU8000 55"

I've tried it with two computers, one with a 980ti, the other with a 1080ti.

There is a very strange way to get the TV to "say" it's running in HDR when connected to the either pc, but whether its actually using HDR is another question.
If you go to Sources and PC, you can edit it to say its a different device. So set it to Bluray Player and HDR supposedly comes on.

I think when i was playing around with the 980ti PC, I did actually get it to work with HDR. But it involved a lot of waiting and reboots due to that annoying flashing.

I need to get another cable to try.

Anyone know why, when I play a 4k HDR Mkv on the 980ti pc with a 4570 cpu, the cpu is maxed out making playback very stuttery...
But the 1080ti pc with 6700k can play them with 4% cpu usage.

Surely the 4570 should be able to handle playback without bottlenecking?

What software are you using to playback?

I had real issues with VLC and 4k, updated VLC to the newest version and it is very smooth now.

Thats with a 3rd gen i7 (i think) and a 270x or 280 gfx card

You need a recent HDMI cable capable of 4K + HDR 18gbps bandwidth. This means buy a cheap HDMI 2.0 cable to try that first.

Also HDR on Win 10 is locked to Playready 3.0 DRM which means you need an Intel IGPU & Intel CPU! Some games do not enforce this though they bypass the Win 10 HDR & talk direct to the hardware.

Why I bought an Xbox1X instead its cheaper if you do not have an Intel system to just buy an Xbox1X which is a joke but there it is!

The cable I bought was a "Cablesson Flat 5m High Speed HDMI Cable", which says: "This fast hdmi to hdmi cable will ensure 4k resolution and 4k video (Full HD, 2160p, 18gbps) on Ultra HD TVs."

I have actually managed to get it working pretty well with my main pc now, although only at 50hz. Any higher and my pc has a fit.
I was using YCbCr444, but it makes Windows desktop a bit of a nightmare to see things clearly. It's possible to to fix by, for some reason turning up the brightness... But it's bright enough already!
Now I'm trying YCbCr422 with 10 bpc (YCbCr444 seems to be limited to 8 bpc) - Using the Nvidia Control panel btw.

I've never been keen on VLC, I did try that but I prefer MPC-HC. Also tried the newer MPC-BE.

I think the problem with my other pc might be that it could do with a clean install of windows. It's full of VR software... I have a spare ssd so I'm going to swap them over and see if that helps.
I will also get a shorter cable to see if I can get 60hz working.

I have exactly the same issue and the same TV (55" NU8009). This thread was very hard to find. no one else seems to have this problem except us. After tons of tinkering, I can confirm your theory.... it is the cable length. I have even worse problems than you with my 10m cable, I even tested another different 10m cable (HDMI 2.0b), same problem.
So I just tested the 2m cable from my ps4 (Just a random Hdmi 2.0 cable from a store) and everything works perfectly !!! 4k HDR 60fps simply with default color nvidia settings . I can do everything now without any issues.

Unfortunately I can't put my tv next to my pc permanently... I need a long cable (10meters), because it's position is on the other side of the room. So the challenge now seems to be, how do you know which cable works ?

@sWiZzLe can you confirm that it works with a shorter cable too ?

YES! it works now perfektly with the HDMI extender ... 4k HDR 60 hz with a 1,5m + 10m HDMI Cable!
This is my Setup: PC -> 1,5 m Cable -> Extender -> 10m Cable -> TV.
When I turn off my TV, windows flashes a bit for 5 seconds or so, but everything is fine after that (before, the flashing didn't stop).

Sorry that it's a german amazon link, but this is the one I used: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B071WX56QF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Can Recommend it for everyone who has a HDMI cable setup longer than 3-5 meters!

I did buy a shorter cable but I also bought a rather expensive extender, called the Denon AVR-2500H :p
So mine goes: PC - 10m - Denon - 1m - TV
It's been working with no problems at 4k HDR 60Hz.
I no longer get the flashing monitor when I turn the TV off, it just goes black for a couple of seconds.

Came across an irritating issue with SkyGo yesterday. If it's fullscreen on the TV, moving the mouse back to the monitor will cause the TV to go an odd shade of pink! I have to restart the TV to fix that, but i rarely use SkyGo.

The 2500H is awesome, it's quite a step up from my rather ancient Cambridge Soundworks DTT2200 and I can finally watch 4k telly with decent sound :D
