Claim against eBay/PayPal?

Long story short;

I bought a fully rebuilt cylinder head from a seller on eBay. It had been rebuilt professionally from his local engine builders. He couldn't find the invoice for the work carried out, but also sent the old parts to prove they had been done.

Within 1/2 mile on road test it snapped a valve, bent it, and damaged the piston. This was due to the valve spring being incorrectly fitted.

I'm now out of pocket of £150 for additional parts to repair it.

Should I open a case with PayPal/eBay? The engine shop isn't replying to me, and he's now wiped his hands with it and not helping anymore.

I want to open a case to compensate my losses, but he was only the seller after all. Unless of cause he actually built it himself?? His last reply said he couldn't get an invoice, and won't help any further.

Any thoughts?

How do you know he actually had the shop carry out the work? He could have sent any old spares as “proof”

The garage that rebuilt has nothing to do with it and it’s all on the seller. Put a claim in with eBay and go from there.

I'll make the claim then. I did't want to penalise someone for something they didn't do. (But there's no proof he didn't do it).

I'll see what PayPal say. Cheers

Yea, I would like to know how you can prove it.

But then again, eBay doesn't care. They would happily refund you *IF* you return it.

Claim from eBay/Paypal for the value of the item (as it doesn't work). As for the rest of the damage you have no comeback there, chalk it up to experience and don't buy parts like that off eBay in future.

I opened a case with Paypal, see what happens. Have requested a part refund to cover the additional costs of repair.

The head was fully built up, valves, springs, camshafts etc, so the incorrectly fitted valve spring couldn't be seen.

It now appears it could have the incorrect inlet camshaft in it - need to strip it down for inspection again. So much for being professionally built!
