So I came home late last night and on the way to bed there was an electrical burning smell from my office (ok gaming area) PC was on and noticed no interweb. so when I was checking the connections under the desk, the switch was red hot and I mean RED HOT it was almost to hot to touch.. I then turned it off at the mains and the transformer was also red hot.. im no expert on electrics so I opened it up this morning, still smells of burning, the only thing I can see is the I thing I think is called an inductor has melted stuff all over the PCB

Are those "aftermarket" ears?

If so I'd suspect any warranty may be void, especially the proximity to the suspected failure.

Although that could just be a nasty failure through no fault of your own, how many open ventilation holes does this switch have as it looks like you've covered some with at least one bracket? Not a problem if there are many more holes so just a thought.

Some smaller switches do vary a lot in temperature and power use though no matter whether managed or not. I replaced a 5 year old 8 port switch at my parents house which always ran very hot with the equivalent newer design and it runs so much cooler and and a power meter showed a corresponding drop in power use.

I can’t see anything melted (viewing on my phone). That white silicon looking stuff is supposed to be there and looks normal.

If it was smelling hot then something has obviously gone wrong, but not so hot that things have melted. Any chance that it’s the power supply that’s failed rather than the actual switch?

What switch is it, and was it mounted where it can a decent amount of fresh air?

The only time i've had a switch overheat is when it's had no ventilation due to some idiot putting that much crap on top/round it that it couldn't regulate it's temperature, the plastic had actually deformed due to heat. The symptoms were exactly as you describe, however I can't see any evidence of melting/burning on that image.

It was just under a desk the vents clear and been running for a year or so. The psu is a transformer like a phone charger not within the switch. The brand is zyxel.. I have a tplink one spare so using that. If anyone can recommend a wap that has 4 lan ports as that's what I idy need

If you want a WAP with four LAN ports use a router and configure it as a WAP.

Google 'router as access point' or search this forum for detailed instructions.

Many routers (e.g. Asus) have AP modes you can select that saves the messing about.
