While looking for a cheap Black Friday laptop I stumbled upon the Medion Erazer X7851 for £830.

Any experience of this laptop/brand? The price seems to good to be true for a 17.2" with a 1060 6GB.
£80 takes the warranty up to 3years.

They are old stock probably, new laptops are out with coffee lake now. OCUK have an Asus one with 1060 for £750.

Says up to 2.2 hours battery life which looks like a problem.

Seems a bit of a gap in prices on here, £750 for the one in that link and next one is £1,100 with an i7 and 16Gb RAM - would have thought a similar spec with an i5 and 8Gb RAM would be there.

As mentioned above, I gather that Clevo are very popular with a solid and upgradeable build.

The downsides seem to be weight / bulk and (in the Medion's case), poor battery life.

I've gone for the 1070 version - X7853 - and expect to take delivery next week.

My approach to gaming laptops, since I don't need the battery life or portability since I'm using it more as a desktop replacement so I can play on the sofa / in the projector room / in the study with the monitor, has been to simply buy the cheapest one with the most powerful graphics card.

My current laptop (Acer with i5 and 960m) lasted 3.5 years before finally not being able to keep up with games, so I've bitten the bullet and gone for a 1070. I'm sure a 1060 would be sufficient, as I'm only gaming at 1080, but I decided to treat myself!

Check out a reasonable review (of a similar spec) and also a full breakdown / case-opening and detailed review of another similar one (google translate the second one if you don't speak German!).

Once I get the laptop, I'll (probably) post back here or in a new thread with my thoughts. I plan to do a bit of tinkering with it (e.g. undervolting the CPU to try and reduce the thermal load on the heatsink to allow the GPU to be overclocked a little) and perhaps reapply thermal paste etc.

From the look of the second review, I can also add in a M2 SSD I have in my current laptop to give me 512 GB of total SSD storage (even RAID 0, although I probably won't bother with that).
