Hi Guys,

It's upgrade time for my GPU and i am totally stuck on what to get, there are my thoughts so far.

1070ti
Pros:
Cheapest of the bunch

Cons:
still a fair chunk of cash for something last gen

1080ti
Pros:
Beast of a card
Will no doubt max everything at 1440p

Cons:
A lot of money for a last gen card
Same price as a 2070 but no ray tracing

2070
Pros:
Will max everything at 1440p
ray tracing cores
latest gen card

Cons:
Relatively unknown if ray tracing will even be a thing
Lots of cash for a unknown.

Current system spec is:
Z370 AORUS ULTRA GAMING WIFI
Intel 8086k OC'd @5Ghz
16 GB AORUS RAM @ 3200MHz
GALAX GTX 970

My monitor is 1440p and in most modern games(Far Cry 5, Rainbow 6 Siege, Rise of the Tomb Raider etc..) i can't hit 60fps with all settings maxed out. if i play on high or med/high, sure i can hit 60, but whats the point of having a bad ass system if we have to lower the detail right?

So basically i want to future proof myself for a few years and max games again @ 1440p.

What should i go with?

You need a paradigm shift.

Get the last gen nonsense out your head.

Buy the fastest card for the money you have..

The 2070 and 2080 are already last gen...they offer no speed increase over 1080ti

1080ti

It’s simple.

HardOCP have a comparison here, though they don't include the 1070 Ti.

TLDR: Don't bother with the RTX 2080, and the RTX 2070 is 40% faster than the GTX 1070 but still slower than the 1080 Ti.

I had the same thought procces, I bought the cheapest 1070ti, not a great deal less in terms of performance, yet is much cheaper

Update: 2070 can be had for £459, 1080 is £529, 1080Ti is faster but currently over £600. Reviews show the 2070 beats, fairly easily, the 1070,1070Ti, 1080 and of course vega56 and 64. With the current bargain prices on the Amd cards they are very attractive. However, the 2070 is the faster card and the Msi Armor version, from the reviews I've read(a lot) overclocks well, stays at 65C and is very quiet and also consumes little electricity in comparison. Therefore I feel the aforementioned 2070 is already better value and more future proofed. So I have found a worthy successor to my ageing 980Ti which is going to my daughter replacing an even more ageing Amd 7870. Yes I know the vega's are really cheap just now but I feel they are high maintenance, require a lot of tweaking to get running right, which I am not willing to do. I have bought an Msi Armor RTX 2070, not from Ocuk sadly but heyho.

More future proofed? The 20 series is already dead:p

Thanks for the info and the self purchase gratification insecurity post. :p

Strokes 1080ti at £599

Ok Mr Smarty pants I have a budget of £450-£500 and I dont want Amd cards or old Pascal cards about to go EOL. What do I buy, my current card is 31/2 yrs old, the 2070 obviously, its new tech and should improve with age and is already miles better than my 980Ti. But wait you recommend a card that is £600 plus, old tech etc. You are so funny Lol. :p:p

You need to get the old tech part out of your mind. My dead pascal card you mention trounces your 2070 was only 99 above your budget. Who cares if its EOL? It doesnt just become obselete...In fact with RT kiiling 2080ti cards it make sthe 1080ti even more desirable if you got a deal like 1080ti @ £579

Gregster is running a £1300 2080ti in DX 11 mode without RT as the hit in frame-rate is just worth it. (he concludes this) This argument for future proofing is just not there.

What you need is a stop gap card or a card with the biggest grunt for the lowest cost. The 2070 is neither.

What res do you game at?

£600 is still an awful lot of money for what it does.
If I had the choice between 1080ti at £600 or Vega 56 for half that and 3 games on top I know what I'm taking.

Dude I agree....Vega 56 @ 299 is where its at... But im on X34 so did the 1080ti deed....I'm seeing drops on the 2080 and tbh I could sell the 1080 ti and get a 2080 but whats the point? I wont RT has it will unplayable at 3440 x 1440

@rolypolyman didnt want an AMD card...But a 2070 @ nearly £500 is ludicrous.

Fair enough I didn't realise you were on a g-sync monitor. Also those deals weren't actually on when you got your card and apart from the 1070ti, most of the cards are at silly prices so you are forgiven haha.

'or a card with the biggest grunt for the lowest cost.' Thank you, exactly what I bought. Your card can no longer be bought for '£579' and is currently £629.99-£800 plus depending on where you look. You sure you read my post. Despite what YOU think of the 20 series cards not everyone shares your views, I put a lot of time and effort into my purchase and I hope I made the right choice. You did great getting your 1080Ti for £579 mate and I really hope you enjoy it, but it is old tech whether you agree or not, time will tell eh! ;)

Look Easy, my 980Ti was £539.99 in July 2015, the 2080Ti is £1100+, the 2070 without the new tech is way better and is £459.99+, currently its the 'biggest grunt for the lowest cost' to quote someone on here, go enjoy your bargain 1080Ti. And YES I know the vega's are cheap but I dont want one!!!!

2070 18 FPS in BF5 with RT @ 1440p

The 2070 is a crap card.

@349 its a decent card.

Not interested in RT right now mate, how many FPS without RT? I get what you are saying but you tend to ignore anyone who has a different opinion.
