"New" Passat Estate 240ps, 4Motion, DSG, BiTDi

They have the soft touch on the tops of the dash which makes it feel a little bit premium, but the rest of the lower down plastics do feel a bit meh. Ive spent time in the current insignia and mondeo, and they dont feel like the lesser car anymore. Dont get me wrong its a good car, but its not a 'want' car, nice engine or not.

Yes I didn’t put a lot of thought into it.

Road tax is about 6 grand too I think :D

Awhile back I was looking to get insurance on one for awhile (for genuine reasons) - most places wouldn't even quote me, Adrian Flux wanted something like £4667.

So not a diesel Passat then.

The BiTdi performance is "reasonable"

0-62mph 6.1sec; Top speed 149mph;

I wouldnt call that exactly terrible. Maybe I should have said brisk performance rather than high.

The leftfield/crazy option is a ZT-T with a supercharger, 0-60 ~4.2 but large fuel bills, but in terms of over all "value" a cheaper liability than £18k on a Passat which will only depreciate even further, but I miss the modern creature comforts and "tightness" of a modern car, hence the craving for something a little boring, but brisk, and a bit more modern.

Like I said, if somone has rave reviews about the Passat BiTDi in terms of how they are, great, but I am struggling to find any to test drive, they are quite a rare model.

Tbh I'd love a hybrid Passat, but the prices are beyond silly.

That’s fast not brisk - don’t let any of the snobs on here who seem to think that unless it’s a BMW Audi or Merc then it’s pants sway you.

The Passat is a highly accomplished car - well put together, well equipped, handsome and comfortable.

It is ultimately a VW so of course it isn’t as plush as an Audi - but then it doesn’t cost the same.

A golf R estate is faster but smaller and less practical. Depends on whether you need all the room a Passat gives you

To put it in perspective, after browsing ebay... Audi A6 Avant 3.0L Quattro,
£16,995.00 for a 2012 model with north of 60k miles.

Compared to the Passat BiTDi, a 16plate would be around that price, so at least 4 years newer.

I cant get on with the size and squashed look of the GolfR, love it as a technical package though. Why oh why they couldnt put that into the Passat chassis, lord knows, it would have been a winner, but obviously a poor seller I guess...

Good point - a proper Passat R with a big petrol lump would be good

Supercharged ZT-T? In the company of some of the cars you’ve mentioned? Really?

As I said earlier, decide what you really want both car and budget wise first.

Joking aside there is little wrong with the Passat. Both my brother in law and father in law have one and they are Scottish so they must be INCREDIBLE value, because sweaty sock. :D

Is it wrong to feel a little smug to own a 245bhp, AWD, flappy paddle (standard auto) estate, 0-60mph in under 7 seconds, all for under £5k? :D

Spend the extra on petrol (you'll need to! 25mpg average being a 3.0 flat 6) and some mods to bring it up to 280bhp at the crank.
