Maybe we could turn Mars into a penal colony?

Reminds me of an old 21st century comic from the mid 60's

It wasnt Mars though, it was the Moon.

"Luneratz" as I recall :D

(Oh and PS, I have always considered Severnaya Zemlya as a potential penal colony for all our lifers and three time losers. I am sure we could do a deal with the Russians. There might well be enough coal and minerals there to make it pay for itself too)

The video of Curiosity landing is still one of the most stupendous things I've ever seen. I hope we get something like-wise for this. Fingers crossed they can get it down safely first.

Crossing fingers and toes for something million of miles away trying to successfully land on a planet with an atmosphere 100 times thinner than ours. Fingers crossed James Webb is 'on time' in a couple of years as well.

Also that Elon Musk hopes to land on Mars in the next 7 years and is doubtful he'lll ever return if he does.

I don't see what the big deal is about going to Mars but getting people back safely. I bet there are lots of people out there (myself included) who couldn't care less if it was a one-way trip. Imagine being one of the first people ever to set foot on an entirely different planet. I'd happily be one of the first to die on an entirely different planet, too.

I suppose it's the modern day equivalent of the passage to the New World. It's kind of exciting when you consider it like that.

I don't know the ins and outs of broadcasting video and whathaveyou but why haven't we had live video from Mars yet? Why do we only get photographs?

Bandwidth.

Deep space engineering is extremely conservative. The data-stream will be nowhere near what is required for real time video.

Thank you. I enjoyed that. :)

I think so too, sometimes. But there's no chance to change your mind once you start. And could you endure all that time trapped in a tiny spacecraft. And then spending so much of your time in the tiny cramped quarters of your dwelling on Mars? And any time you went out you were encased in a heavy outfit? You'd never be able to run freely again or feel wind on your face. I believe we may settle Mars one day and I like to think we will. But the first people to do so will be people with incredible fortitude.
