Recommended Uk ISP's

I am desperate to change to a better ISP, I have been with Virgin for a number of years now and to be quite frank, their Broadband is terrible for gaming due to their truly awful Superhubs. Download speeds are great and consistent, but I would gladly trade a few mb/sec download speed for a reliable gaming experience. Putting the SH3 into Modem mode doesn't even fix the latency issues it has.

Can anyone recommend me an ISP? I know Sky would be the obvious one, but I'm not a fan of them either tbh, and they are pretty expensive if just going for Broadband only due to the £19/month line rental ontop of what you pay for the Broadband.

I would like to be able to play online games again without random DC's and lagging all the time.

Thanks

Hmm can't help you with a recommendation but I did hear a while back that the SH3 has some serious issues with its hardware and latency - apparently Virgin are aware of it but have done nothing. Maybe there's a new hub on the horizon? Who knows.

I run my SH2 (square thing) in modem mode with a Netgear 7800 router. There are days when I have intermittant issues but I rarely experience lag for games.

You'll probably garner a better answer in the Networks/Internets subforum - https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/forums/networks-internet-connectivity.6/

I was going to put it in there, but it's under the Hardware section, I assumed it would be the incorrect sub-forum for it.

I know you're not keen and find them expensive, but Sky has been amazing for me for years. They have even upgraded my 36mb line to 63mb for free this month :D

I've been exhaustively googling for a couple of hours now trying to find one of these Super Fast Fibre companies that are actually available in my area, but it looks like they stick mostly to big cities, with the odd one focusing only on small villages. I can't wait for it to become the norm, Virgin Media has the monopoly at the moment on High speeds, but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone to be frank. I will check out Sky again and see if I can get a cheaper deal, they look pretty expensive though from first glance. Not that VM are cheap anymore.

A month ago I would have agreed with you, but I recently switched from Plusnet to Talk Talk and my connection is now definitely worse. I get the same sync rate and the connection is stable, however I am now getting packet loss, ping jitter and inconsistent download speeds from the same sources that used to work perfectly with Plusnet.

They're cheaper for a reason :(

I was definitely joking. They're crap and have always been crap. I've amended my post now, my bad!

We use Zen Internet which costs a bit more but I get low stable gaming pings, no drop outs and streams / downloads at full speed any time of the day. Had them initially for broadband and now fibre, both fine in my experience. The support is very helpful as well.

Plusnet if you can get it. Probably go back to them when my BT deal is up. Whatever you sign up to make sure you do it through a cashback site, such as topcashback or quidco.

I was already aware of the issues with the Superhub 3 latency issues due to the cpu, so no surprises there. A small update, I was one of the few that refused to let the VM engineer leave with my SH2 when they "upgraded" me to SH3 thankfully, and I've dug it out. It's installed now but I had to call VM to get them to authorise the router which they did over the phone eventually once I made it clear they couldn't convince me to keep the SH3. I've got an old Asus RT-N56U router in a drawer so I'm going to stick the SH2 into Modem mode and set up the Asus router and go from there. If I continue to have issues then i'll be calling VM back. They offer v.fast speeds, but the stability of the connection can sometimes be questionable, add that to shocking performance of the SH3 and its borderline useless for gaming.

If my new setup doesn't pan out, i imagine I will go with Plusnet as they have performed well in customer feedback from what I can see. A significant drop in download speeds unfortunately, but worth it in the long run.

Update: I'm all setup on the Asus router, all told it took around 45 mins to get going. The first thing i noticed immediately was browsing speed has increased significantly, google opens almost instantaneously and loading this forum was also noticeably faster. I will have to wait and see how it handles gaming.

The superhub 3 is incredible only in how pants it is. Sometimes my laptop can't even see it randomly. I've given up fiddling with it, VM are gone when contract is up
