Seat Ibiza out of warranty turbo charger failure

Very nicely done OP! Cracking result

£1600 for a turbo on a 1.2 Ibiza
That's exactly why it annoys me that the majority of new cars are getting small engines with turbos on its just an added expensive headache that u don't need on a small low powered run around of a car.
You've Put me right off getting a mazda MPs or Focus 225 ST now if that's how much turbos can cost lol :(

Thats a main dealer cost ;) ie a fictional number they made up :p
And then slapped some ridiculous labour charge on top.

Turbos even much better ones than stock for an MPS are far cheaper than this. Stock Ko4 costs peanuts lol, not sure on the stock ones for the ST's tho, never looked at them.

Don't let a random fault put you off mate :)

i hired an Ibiza 1.2TSI in spain in the last 7 days. got back home today.

i loved the engine. fantastic at slow speed in traffic. i was thinking perhaps get one or leon but now i read your thread. i'll think i'll forget

1,600 bill on 3 years old small engine car - something wrong with it

Isn't that a bit of an odd reaction to this thread?

I imagine there is a thread somewhere on the Internet reporting every possible problem for every car of the past several years.

£110 for a brand new turbo fitted by a main dealer out of warranty. I would bite their hand off.

Also nearly £2000 for a small little turbo? Ridiculous.

the idea of small turbo engined car is cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to tax etc. then suddenldy you're facing a £1,600 bill is ok?

no it is not ok

I never said it was or wasn't OK. Seat didn't think it was OK so they gave him a nearly free turbo. My question is why you think one guy posting about it on the Internet is somehow cause for you to consider another car. Do you think it should be 100% reliable in all cases?

i was talking about the cost of the repair. not reliability

have you heard of £1,600 repair bill on 3.5 yrs old NA 'cheap car to run' car?

i'd expect to see £1,600 bill on BMW 330d etc not on seat 1.2tsi

by the way i just find it bit odd that Seat is happy to reduce the bill from £1,600 to £110 lol might as well not charge him anything. i guess £110 is a typo.....£1100. why else the OP is asking for more discount from £110 lol

I'm normally in the camp of pushing dealers to get their best deals, but even I can't argue with a dealer reducing the bill by £1700 unprompted! Never heard of that before, normally they low ball you with stupid 35% off the labour or some crap. If it is a typo and they want to charge you 1100 plus VAT for it, that's when you tell them to go jump and push for it to be reduced significantly/done FOC. Cite the fact it appears to be a prevalent issue, you bought the car from them, have it serviced there every year and was looking to upgrade to a new Seat next year or whatever.

Edit: bah, should have read the thread closer. £106 is a good deal.

I was just having a quick look around the internet as I have an Ibiza myself. It's an 07 model but I was looking to upgrade to one of these 1.2 tsi models in the future.

It sounds like your problem might have been due to a faulty sensor in the EPC. Apparently a new sensor will cost about £15. Plus labor and VAT would come to around £106.

So the dealer quoting £1,600 for a fix is just a load of rubbish. The dealer probably thinks by implying they've given you such a good deal that you'll always return to them for servicing, MOT's and new cars in the future.

Also why are you getting the car serviced at a main dealer, they do very little for the amount you pay.

My cousins Polo 1.2 tsi also had this happen last week! Dash lit up like a Christmas tree and car went into limp mode. Dealer says turbo charger has gone but the car was bought in 2013 so under warranty.

Good evening.

A few days ago my 2011 Seat Ibiza 1.2 tsi went into limp mode with elm light and epc lights showing on dash. Got the car towed to The seat dealer where we bought it from and where car has been serviced since.

After a day of diagnostics and contact with seat uk turns out there has been some sort of turbo failure. Car is out of warranty by a couple of months and would be a 1600+vat repair bill.

Without prompting the dealer has negotiated a good will gesture between seat, seat uk and the dealership which brings it back to 110 for us to pay...I am obviously very happy at the vastly reduced cost however wondering if others have experienced similar things and should I push for further discount?

If I'm honest I'm pretty happy with the way the dealer has handled this and ready to accept the 110 payment as feared would be much more but interested to hear of others experiences.

And this is why I prefer a NA engine for my daily :D

These tiny 3cyl "eco" engines run hot and under a lot of stress. That isn't good for long-term reliability and turbos are a liability to begin with :/

£1-3000 for a new turbo is pretty normal. Your lucky it didn't damage something else when it blew, or it would be an engine rebuild or replacement.
