so looking like a decent 60fps at QHD.

had i of seen this 2 months ago i may have kept my 2080ti order in!. It looks more promising for this generation imo....

I never doubted raytracing was the future of videogames but i am more hopeful now that 4k / 60 with RTX will be doable next generation.
 
They reduced the amount of raytracing (optimized?) to gain a higher frame rate. The whole point of raytracing was 'it just works', no additional need of developer time.

They optimized it.

They mentioned there was some bug that with Nvidia's help they fixed which was killing fps. As well as that RT only parts of the scene where it matters and not on other parts in this way saving performance.

So yes optimized.

I was thinking about this and RTX is one of those tech that is 'too big to fail' since Nvidia have invested so much into it. I'm sure its hard to get it all working in a AAA title right the first time. I think it's better for Nvidia to err on 'make it look pretty first and we'll optimise later' as a screenshot sells the tech and product. I think RTX is interesting and whole games could be made from the ground up for it instead of bolted on toward to the end. Personally I'm waiting to see what the 2060 price/performance is like and I would rather get a 2060 than a 1070, but thats me.
 
You really don't want to see any improvements, which is a shame. Begrudging performance gains is savage :(
In the video, they said the quality of the ray tracing is increased as well as the performance. This was not achieved by reducing quality which is great news, I've refunded my faulty 2080TI and am waiting for 7nm but I'm pleased for 20 series owners as there's nothing worse than spending this much money and it being disappointment.

Just had a play and sitting happily at 70 fps with occasional dips to 40 fps with Ultra set at 3440x1440. Playing very nicely.

Yes, it's too big to fail, it will eventually get there. I think most people want it to happen, it's just going to take a while is all. Metro Exodus is one game that's been designed from scratch with Ray Tracing in mind. It was the game used for the Demo back in March this year. They are hoping to have it out in February next year. It's only going to be 60fps at 1080p, but, hopefully it will be using more Ray Tracing, so we will get a chance to see what real Ray Tracing looks like in a game.

To me it looks like they simply reduced its impact, like going from ultra to low, though I don't doubt that there were inefficiencies at the start which they've addressed now. If that's what is considered "optimization", meh. It's like how they try to spin DLSS 4K as being real 4K too - baloney, though I don't doubt some people will happily latch on to it.

Still, I don't think the performance is that bad for a first gen product, though I wouldn't care much for it as it stands. It looks like it's going to be quite interesting when the next cards arrive in 2020, hopefully added to CP2077 as well & with good enough performance for 4K.

Tghe image on the right is much better, and much faster.

They haven't reduced ultra down to low, they have made a number of optimizations and bug fixes. One optimization is to reduce rays on surfaces that are less reflective, and in turn increase rays on more reflective surfaces so image quality improves and frame rates increase.


As for DLSS, Nvidia don't claim it is 4K, they claim the image quality is equivalent to 4K with better TRAA which from what people are saying seems to hold true apart from the odd edge case. In many respect the DLSS image is better than vanilla 4K, whcih is why it is also possible to run DLSS on native 4k images.
 
Yes and like @ltron said, might be driver improvements, as I was expecting a bit more, although there was a BFV update but not really big enough for a big patch.

Just checking, one of the Nvidia drivers had a bug that swapped the Ultra and Low RT settings on some surfaces. So people were getting great frame rates on Ultra but it was actually low :)

It just works...

...Sometimes, but it needs a lot of work before it just works. Also one day it might just NOT work and you'll need to RMA :D
 
Didn't you read? Bug fix and downgrade.
Downgrade? They've got lots of optimisations coming in the next patch and after apparently. Good to see they're working closely with NVidia and will continue to do so.
Shame so many continue to want to hate RT and focus on any negatives...……because the cards cost too much :D. Open your eyes to the fantastic tech that it is, will be, once it develops further.
