I have 600+ 100% ebay feedback

Sold a classic style formal overcoat on ebay £40

Size large 42-44 inch chest as per the coats label

Buyer claims does not fit and is not as listed. He is suggesting measuremnt is 48-52 inch?

Fitted me ok over a suit and I'm 42 inch chest

Am wondering if the buyer was after a slim fit style rather than classic fit

I've got no returns on this listing....... though am flexible if buyer covers all postage costs

Anyone have similar experience or advice on this before I get back to buyer?

Thanks

tell him to take it up with the manufacturer if the label says 42-44 and he reckons it's not.

i believe that counts for nothing if the buyer raises a 'not as described' claim

I stand by my description and will refer him to label sizing.

He seems to have good feedback and am thinking will likely offer him a refund if he covers all postage

Sadly, you'll likely find that eBay will side with the buyer.

From past experience, eBay doesn't seems to care what your listing says, when the buyer files a claim - you then have to either offer a partial refund, or a return. I have tried to question previous situations with eBay support, and pretty much just got a scripted line, even though the claim brought against me was clearly shot down by my listing text and photographs. And don't even entertain the support forums - my goodness, those people there really have a high opinion on themselves and see eBay as a club for professionals only.

Best of luck with it anyway.

If he wants to send it back, he can. Ebay will side with him whatever happens.

also compounded by paypal offering free returns if you don't like the item...will get him to use this option

Thanks. Its's unfortunate selling on ebay you cant choose the buyer...every now and again will get these situations and is best to just offer refund.

Indeed - you just have to take it on the chin sometimes, it still stings a bit though. But it tend to offer a partial refund, in an effort to keeps things civil - though I have also blocked the buyer after the claim has been resolved, if I think they took the wee wee.

You sort of can in a way, just set a high buy it now price and enable make me an offer. That way you can check out their feedback unless they just purchase at full price anyway. Wouldn't help in this case though as the buyer has good feedback.

The expectations of customers has changed a lot since Amazon started doing next day delivery with prime and free returns for pretty much anything, good for the consumer but means sellers are expected to do more even if they state that they don't.

That' eexactly the size I would expect for a large.
Unfortunately you'll have to accept a return.
Might not have to pay postage though as it is described accurately

You'd expect 48-52 inch chest to be large? You must be disappointed a lot because that's xl to xxl to hahahaha not for you category in pretty much anywhere speaking from experience.

Surely if the label in the coat says 42-44 inch chest, it is exactly as described.

If the buyer recons it is 48-52 inch, he must only be ~ 36 inch chest. (so needs to eat more pies ;))

From experience you can ask the buyer to return at their cost but if they raise a case for item not described you will be stuck with the bill. £3.05 per return label from memory. Partial refund might be the way to go

thanks for all the replies

If its still in messaging (not in dispute resolution), take one of the pictures of the item you had, crop it a bit to zoom in on the label showing the size and reply with that image attached along the lines of "item is as described, sorry I can't help it if your not as big as you think you are" or words to that effect.

This will help counter any claims they have in claiming "not as described". If it goes to dispute, do the same. Ensure in all comms you point out clearly this fact. If they then go for a different return reason (like condition/colour wrong), then it should be clear to ebay from previous comms, they've changed their mind as reason for sending it back and clearly seem to hope you were offering a try before you buy service as your expense.

Might not help in this instance but unlike the above, I do think sometimes ebay resolutions can work out ok for the seller if its all fairly clear in the comms and the original description.

I have messaged the buyer back advising my listing description is accurate with photo of label and link to the stores sizing guide confirming large = 42-44 chest

buyers response :

"The coat is labelled Large but the tape measure says 48inch when buttoned up. I should have asked for a pit to pit measurement first.

Sorry to have to return the item but it’s not as listed"

He's worn it for his Xmas do and now wants to return for his money back.

My experience is that you can message to and fro, but once he escalates it to a claim/dispute as in "not as described", you will lose, he will get his money back he may also leave negative feedback.

In these instances, to keep my 100% feedback, i'd just accept the return and block him.

Looking at this guide overcoat sizes are sized to correspond with your suit size i.e a couple of inches bigger to accommodate the suit underneath

https://www.wikihow.com/Size-an-Overcoat

"Use your basic suit size for reference. If you tend to wear a particular size in business attire, keep these dimensions in mind when shopping for an overcoat. If you’re unsure, visit a professional tailor or buy a fabric measuring tape and find out for yourself. In most cases, your optimal overcoat size will correspond exactly with your suit size, as modern overcoats are sized to fit over a suit jacket or sport coat.
  • A size 42 overcoat will not be exactly 42 inches around the chest. The sizing number is listed to match your suit size, but will actually be a couple of inches bigger to accommodate the suit underneath"

I will continue to message him and initially offer full refund less postage costs as the overcoat sizing is as described
