Is it just me, or is this insanely overpriced?

I came across this add a couple of hours ago on Gumtree while browsing what was in my local area. I get that it comes with 3 monitors, but 1080p 60hz monitors are hardly expensive these days. Is it just me, or is this insanely overpriced? I messaged him suggesting maybe he sell the monitors and PC separately to a) expedite the sale and b) not have someone poor sod offer him a lot more money than it's worth just because it's Christmas time and they have no idea what they are looking at but he just sent me back a couple of cocky emails so I've dropped it. Maybe I'm wrong and it's a fair price, I certainly wouldn't pay it.

I see posts like these all the time on Gumtree. Somehow, despite the massive range in specs they have, they're all able to "...play the latest games on high settings!". I wonder how many people get conned into buying crappy PCs.

I'll offer one of my jungle nymph for a porche 911

Facebook is my favourite for ridiculously overpriced items and mugs who buy them!

I can think of three explanations off the top of my head:

1) Genuine ignorance as to the value of the stuff. Maybe they're going on what each bit cost new at the time, perhaps.
2) Low quality scammer trying to con someone who's ignorant of the value of the stuff.
3) Small scale low quality money laundering. You could launder a bit of money by pretending to sell stuff at inflated prices. Make £500 illegally, sell something for £500, claim you sold it for £1000 and there's a superficially plausible explanation for your illegal £500.

This seems quite plausible, perhaps not necessarily what they paid at the time but presumably they're completely clueless as to how much it should have depreciated in value by now and perhaps have only knocked a little bit off the amount they originally paid.

I'm not sure the money laundering is too plausible, seems a bit convoluted, especially given you're talking about a cash transaction.

That was what I was thinking. It's not always easy to find a good price for older kit even if you do have a quick look online because it's common for people selling older kit to price high and people buying older kit to price low. You see that to some extent even on these forums, which have a far higher than average proportion of people with far more knowledge of PC kit.

I don't think it's very likely, but I think some low-level criminals might see it as a Cunning Plan if it was explained to them. Even if it is a cash transaction, the advert itself provides some sort of record of it. It's not something anyone with much of a clue would do, but there are plenty of people without much of a clue. Bob the Burgler is unlikely to be a criminal mastermind. That's why I called it "low quality", "small scale" and "a superficially plausible explanation".

When I messaged him trying to be nice and let him know he was a "bit" off the mark with his pricing he replied with "supply and demand. If people are willing to pay it, why should i take less for it. Come on mate, switch on". Going by this and the fact he has listed it as having an i7 processor (yes he hasn't even bothered to list which one, or the mhz of the Ram for that matter) I'm going to go out on a limb and say he is ignorant to what the true value is of what he is selling. Either that or there is a huge demand for 5 year old graphics cards at a premium that I don't know about. I just hope he doesn't ruin some poor guys/woman's Christmas when they part with their hard earned and find out they have paid 100% Mark up.

Going by that, my PC must be "worth" at least £1500, maybe £2000. I wonder if he wants to buy it. I'll even switch it on for him :)

I have a similar spec PC bar the ram and I've only one monitor. That was about the price I paid for mine when new so the seller is dreaming. I'd not pay more than £500 for it. There is no way it'll play any game either, comical.

I like Gumtree. I had a 2x two seater sofas up for sale at £100. The guy phoned up, didn't even try to haggle the price down and said he'd be around in an hour or so after he'd borrowed his dad's Transit. He turned up, looked them over and dutifully counted off the £200 and we manhandled them from the lock up to his van and he left. Yes, I did say £200. For some reason he decided to give me double the money. Never heard back from him either, so I wondered if he thought they were £100 each not for the pair.

You see some very over priced PCs on Gumtree as people just dont know the value of things. I find it quite amusing really

I do find this funny though There is one ad that keeps being refreshed and pushed to the top, for a £120 PC, with 8GB of Ram and a lightning fast intel processor. it hadn't sold in at least 3 months. The seller relists it literally every day, and has not moved on price whatsoever in 3 months of selling it! He must have spent more than £120 of his time putting it on Gumtree everyday!

I was going to say he’s added a 1 in front of £700 by mistake but by his response clearly he’s serious about the price!

Tbh I wouldn’t pay £400 for the lot.

To be fair though he does say “it’ll play any game” rather than claiming at high settings etc which it will just not very well @ 5760x1080 on a GTX 770! :p

The scary thing is some mug will see three screens and water cooling and assume it’s the bees knees and buy it :/

a lot of people value items that are used at 70%+ of original value regardless of condition or age. yes it's moronic in most instances but on sites like eBay, gumtree etc it's down to the buyer, who's an adult to figure out out tbh.
