Do you actually own your car?

Yes I intend to buy all my cars outright but only a couple of mine in the past have had any real value and they were kept in a garage and only drive a few thousand miles each year. Current RX7 being a good example which I've had for 8 years now.

For the first time since I was driving £1k cars, I do actually own my latest car outright.
My previous two cars were purchased via a loan from my parents, so I guess those could be considered outright purchases, but I still had to pay them back.
Prior to that, finance from Peugeot and Renault.
Latest car was a cash purchase.

Why does it matter?

Came to post this.

Really don't understand why the OP is bothered about it enough to create a poll about it. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

I read that over 90% of new car purchases (or even nearly new) are either on PCP or HP, was interested to see how that stacks up against this forum.

I have to admit I am quite surprised at these results, allot of premium cars mentioned here that people actually own. Where do people find £30k+ to just splash on a car? If you're simply a baller then my hat comes off to you.

Adding a 2008 Megane to make us a 2 Renault family this morning. Cash purchase.

Having a car each is obligatory out in the sticks where everything is a 20 minute drive away.

Previously, I had an Audi company car followed by 2 Honda CR-Vs on PCP.

Owned a number of motorcycles in the 80s and 90s - all cash purchases.

Results in this poll are skewed by old sub 5k cars probably.

You have included used cars which won’t test the ‘90% of new cars’ statement

Very true. Many people could afford an older car with the deposit they put down on a financed car anyway.

Bought my GT86 on PCP for deposit contribution, paid it off in full, I have owned my car for the last few years.

Only put 1k cash down, would have been an old car for that.

Lease the E Class, some finance on the R8 but big deposit so nice fat chunk of equity even at current rates and own some MX5’s outright....and some houses, which oddly has nothing to do with my forum name :D

OP's question wasn't "Do you actually own your car from new?" So no, the poll isn't skewed.

Managed it on both leases I have had! I guess it comes down to a mixture of luck, timing and being ok with whats available.

You beat depreciation on a lease car? You must have leased it for £0 down and £0 a month!

Not a chance, buying it right would have been completely foolish, for several reasons, first it was a brand new model, secondly the depreciation from new would be way higher than the total cost over 3 years of PCH, and finally the huge chunk of money that would have been consumed has thus far earned an average of 6.1% interest over the last 2 years.
