Given the fantastic discounted price for the 2700X here at the moment, my planning for a 2600X has been given a bit of a bump...

If you don't use SLI/Crossfire, what does an X470 board buy you over a B450 for a 2700X? Are VRMs critcal if you're not pushing big overclocks / just using XFR at the defauts?

Out of the two below, is the X470 worth the extra ~£50? (my preference is to stick with a Gigabyte board)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £248.04 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Yep - seen that in a few threads. Just not sure what it actually means.

If I plan on just using XFR for the default boost and not manually overclocking what does the difference in VRMs mean? The X470 would be less stressed running under load? Is it a similar concept to having headroom on a PSU? Is it a longevity issue for the board?

Somebody like Buildzoid (Actually Hardcore Overclocking) is good to watch on Youtube if you have some spare time. He has loads of videos on VRM's etc.

This one covers B450 boards:

And also one that covers the Gigabyte X470 Ultra:

yeah, i keep posting it because the same questions keep getting asked :p

basically just pick a board you like from mid-range and up and you'll mostly be fine :)

then you're looking at b450 itx, x470 gaming 5 or x470 ultra gaming

Cheers guys... that's interesting. Thanks for the links.

Looks like it's an X470 if I'm sticking to a full sized board.

Would get x370 a very b450 any day for x2700x overclocked 4.2ghz all cores plus .

Can pick them up for £130 .

Or just get b450 and 2700 non X and leave as be , job done :) also cheaper to

As mentioned by Orbital you can get a better X370 board. The Gigabyte X370 Gaming K7 is currently £149.99 and in stock. It doesn't support the R7 2700X out of the box but the bios should be up to date unless it is really old stock. Also @GIGA-Man is the Gigabyte forum rep who can also assist if need be with any potential bios issue. I don't know if OCUK can state if the current stock is R7 2xxx ready.

The X470 Ultra should still be fine though if you want that board.

no xfr2 and pbo? :(
in my opinion, kinda negates getting good vrms on a x370 board compared to a b450 board then?

It will all work fine. The Bitwit vid below also confirms there is no real difference between X370 and X470 with an R5 2600X.

ok yeah, did a bit more digging. PB2 works with x370, XFR2 is inbuilt within the chip and isn't affected by board/chipset choice, PBO is bios dependent. so yes, agreed X370 board is better than B450 board. confusion cleared :D

I ended up ordering the X470 Ultra Gaming along with a 2700X. Should arrive on Thursday.

After seeing what happened here: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/gigabyte-ax370-e6-code.18841169/ I didn't want to run the risk of dealing with the hassle of getting an unbootable board and cpu combo. I did think about getting the B450 Tomahawk, but in the end decided to stick with Gigabyte.

Cheers all, and Merry Christmas!
