HMV Finally closing down for good?

In what way can they move with the times?

I get that digital is the way forward, but how can a high street shop adopt that approach and compete with the big boys like Spotify, Apple, Netflix...
People still buy records but not in the same volume. My 15 year old daughter still does. They could have tried moving to smaller, cheaper premises, focussing on niche products, etc.

How do you stream when you don't have Internet access /slow Internet speeds?
Even when I can’t stream, i still use streming apps. I don’t buy physical media jus5 because there might be a slow internet connection. Just download all your favourites when you have a good connection or overnight, and stream only if you can and want.

HMV went bust in 2013. This is just a new ****** investment company who bought the rights to the name. Same way as that crappy catalogue company bought the rights to the Woolworths name.

Explain how. A massive effect- really? People over extending themselves on credit is a lot more likely.

People tend to not spend when the economic outlook is uncertain, especially since 2008 is still quite fresh in people's memories. It's not all down to Brexit, people have been feeling the squeeze for a number of years but the added uncertainty and perceived risk absolutely impacts on consumers willingness to spend. You've got retailers online and in stores who are saying that they're having to discount much more heavily after boxing day because demand wasn't sufficient in the run up to Christmas, as such they're left with dead stock they can't shift. Even then it doesn't seem to have worked

Declining footfall for 3 years in a row.

Online retailers aren't immune either, ASOS and other online fashion retailers took a kicking, Amazon had a record breaking Christmas but it's difficult to tell if that is people spending more or Amazon penetrating further into the market.

I'm not saying that Brexit is the biggest factor, but consumer confidence is a huge factor and Brexit uncertainty has an impact there.

We have tried to support our local (Swindon) HMV and have had a couple of trips up to Oxford Street too. However although they dropped the traditional markup on stuff they used to sell, the selection was not always that good - little bit of everything not a lot of anything. The London store was particularly diminished compared to years gone by, very cramped and stock all arranged randomly no real order.

Both the missus and I are really into 4K disc format and as HMV the only reliable High Street location it will be a blow if they go. The supermarkets aren't really interested in 4K, they would much rather just pile up lo-res DVD's and sell them at a cut price. If it's not in the Top 20 or the latest "Now" drivel, forget buying a CD in Tesco or Sainsburys etc., too.

Shame for the staff been years since i have even looked at a cd or dvd. Last time i went into a HMV was full of weird T shirts and other junk from shows

Feel sorry for the staff but lets be honest the high street shops are a dying breed and its only a matter of time before more start to disappear.

We have not had a HMV in my town since the last time they went under and i cant say i have missed them.

How do you stream when you don't have Internet access /slow Internet speeds?
You need about 2Mbps to stream HD video content on iPlayer and similar apps (SD even less). Where in the country doesn't have internet that fast available these days, either fixed or mobile? If such a place does exist, I doubt they have an HMV on the local high street.

I miss Our Price, my favourite however was Virgin Megastores. I used to spend so much money in their boxing days sales.
Yeah, I worked near the flagship Piccadilly Circus one. Used to spend ages in there. Does anyone know what became of that building? It still stands empty on google maps?

The difference this time to last time is that before they had crippling rents to pay and it was massively eating into profits. This time around we've had a massive uptake in streaming services, legal and otherwise over the last 5 years and they can't compete.

Even when it comes to physical products, do I do a 30 mile round trip or just go on my app and get it delivered the same or next day from amazon normally at a cheaper price than the likes of HMV have it for.
