So my older 'spare Rig' that is mostly used as a movie player and backup gaming rig if main one fails, only an old Q6600 with GTX660 died December (Reboot loops, dead BIOS by the looks of it, tried "everything" but nothing will get it bootable again) so its time to replace it. R.I.P - 2007 - 2018

Now I have 2 options for this:

#1 Buy a cheap reverb but all I can find are some nasty looking Dell and Lenovo's YUCK!
#2 Buy a new Main Rig (current main is a 4790K 16GB DDR3 1060 6GB) but this is looking rather pricey

So here is a 'mock' build I am looking at (yes I know its not OCUK but I like this website's layout)

Now I don't need a HDD or an Optical for this I have a USB boot ready
I put the 1070 in as they didn't have 1070ti in stock BUT I think I may take out the GPU all together and just use the 1060 6GB that I already have to lower to cost

So can OCUK beat this price for a 9th Gen i7 with z390 and do these 2 parts work 'out the box' so no need for bios update as I did get a bit confused when reading up on this?
GPU dosn't matter can go with or without if anyone wants to make a spec for me.

TY Again and Happy new year.

Hi

Not sure if OCUK do price matching so you would have to ask the shop guys on that.

The Z390 chipset works out of the box with the 9th gen and 8th gen, so a 9700K or even 8700K both work from the off.

Not a fan of CiT cases or products myself. I would look at something like the Fractal Design Focus for a budget case, or something from Antec/Cooler Master etc as they also have decent budget offerings. You can also dial down the psu wattage to 550W.

One other thing is you will need a cpu cooler if you don't have one to reuse as the 9700K doesn't come with one.

I did mean to ask about the PSU I knew that one would be overkill but I do want to get one that will future proof me if I upgrade the GPU but I only plan on a single GPU build so don't need too much.

now I know I said I don't need a HDD However I have been looking at m.2 storage as I have never used a SSD or M.2 before, is there anything I should know about these compatibility wise?

another thing I noticed is that all the CPU's are rated for 2666 MHz RAM Max speed, now is this just a simple case of enabling XMP in BIOS and everything will be ok? (been out the loop for a while, had to do this with my current system with DDR3 1600 and want to know if this is just the same thing?)

A 650W would handle a 2080 ti. You def don't need 850W though.

An M.2 SSD is just the same as a SATA but a different way of connecting it. So you can get a Samsung 860 EVO for example in SATA and M.2 variants and they both perform the same. The other type is NVMe such as the 970 EVO. They are a lot faster on paper but don't usually give any major benefit for things like gaming or boot/load times.

Yes for the ram you just enable the xmp profile to get it set at it's correct speed i.e 3000 or 3200 etc.

Get a 600W max PSU. I don't see why you would need more if you only will have 1 GPU and even then 500-600w is more than enough. Could even make do with a 400w decent one.

I agree that a 550W is easily enough for a mid range gpu like the GTX 1070. Some of the AMD Vega can be pretty power hungry though. A 650W will cover more or less any single card setup though without going overboard. There is usually not much of a price difference anyway between 550W and 650W models. The Antec 550W and 650W Earthwatts for example are £73 and £79 respectively so for the sake of £6 might as well get the 650W.

Just to echo what lee32uk said about the CiT case - I built a machine recently for a friend's son who chose one of those and it was a nightmare to work on. Questionable quality, with riveted drive cages that could not be removed. We had problems plugging in cables to the PSU due to the design - there was a complete lack of space, and nothing we could do about it with a dremel!

I've had both the cheaper and more expensive Fractal Design cases over the years, and they've all been good.

Yep unless there's a massive saving, most of the time the prices between those 400-500-600w PSU's are only a few £'s. Also with a higher rated one, it should last longer as the caps won't be pushed to their limits. But saying that, most PSU's I've had over the years have lasted ages without a problem.

I'd also agree on getting a Fractal case. Really good quality for the price.

The case was just in there as a 'price marker' to get an idea of budget so I can change that, I haven't looked too far into case designs yet

I do actually have a spare 600w PSU but its about 10 years old and I don't know how long it will have left so I might look to get a 650w..

also I might wait until April/May to get the new build as I have time off then so my spec will most likely end up being completely different by then anyway :)

Depends on the spare 600w PSU. You could save yourself some money and use it in the build. Who knows it may outlast the build so you don't necessarily need a new one.
