Nismo 370Z Thoughts?

And if you don't push 10/10 is the Z4 a better buy? Might be less reliable I guess and the price may make a difference here because the Z4 might be closer to the 370Z when it comes to normal driving.

I very nearly bought a 35is. They are quick and as Gibbo has said they map to become insanely quick. The exhaust sounds amazing on them. Hard top is fantastic. However - tech feels a bit dated and the handling just wasn't quite there. Have I mentioned they sound amazing? My God they do.

Hey all, thanks for your replies, firstly apologies for the bad wording on my part in the OP! I actually already own a Nismo 370Z, but was just curious as to peoples thoughts about them / why they are not more popular. I have amended the wording to be more clear!

I think they sit in a bit of a problem spot in that people that can comfortably afford them tend to look to the GTR instead and those that can't tend to look at the 350 instead hence not very popular.
I disagree with this statement, as the GTR is a world away in running costs and maintanence. People seem to prefer going for german cars it seems, like an S3 or the Golf R's

It's a love or hate car. Go for an extended drive if you can.
I love it, but apparently lots of people don't, they have very poor sales over here in the UK! Its main competitor here is the newly introduced Mustang.

Running costs will put a lot of people off.
Fair point, I guess it is not the most practical car either.

Caymans are 10k more no? so not realy comparable?
You can get in to a regular "Non S" Cayman, for similar money (I looked at the time, but for me personally it was to much of a loss in bhp / grunt to consider)

If only you could buy them used...
See above, I bought my nismo used for under £30k, at that price point it was pretty much low spec non "s" Cayman 981s at the time.

If you want something with nice grunt, reasonably rare and good handling and you don't drive like a nutter or push a car to 10/10th's and beyond the 370Z is great.

If you do push a car hard and too its limits then the Cayman is simply in another league, its a true sports car and proper drivers car and if I had 40k and my options with 370Z or used Cayman S I'd be going to Porsche tomorrow to buy a used Cayman S with 2yr OPC warranty. :)
Agreed that the Cayman S is a better all round car, how ever it sits at another price point above a used 370Z, and the maintenance is a factor as well.

I actually had a Z4 35is DCT before this car, man what a car! That thing was fast, it was remapped with MHD, and had a beatiful exhaust note and gurgle. The engine was sublime (N54) as were the lightning quick shifts! How ever I missed a manual car, and the linear power of a NA engine so I came to a 370Z as there are not many choices of big NA engine cars in this price point.

Not driven a modern Z4 so hard to comment, assume your talking about the modern turbocharged versions? If so they are supposed to be fantastic and hugely quick especially if you map them, they have ZF8 I think so as a daily car and acceleration wise car probably the winner of them all as so easy to drive. But no idea how they handle on limit, if anything like an M2 then epic, the last Z4 I drove was the Z4M Coupe some years back, what a riot that was, total drift machine, great fun and sounded awesome been essentially the S54 shoved into a tiny car. :D
The Z4 35is has the same DCT box has the E92 M3 and Ferrari California, 80ms shift times IIRC! They were violent shifts at times, especially when remapped. The car was a mid 12 second car with just a basic remap, amazingly fast and responsive to mods!

Agreed about the handling part, the handling did not inspire confidence, and the bumpiness of the ride has to be the worst I have ever felt, how ever that car flew and sounded great.

Drove one. Bought a porsche.
Which model did you buy?

Granted cost of running a GTR and practicality is very different but my point is the cars ostensibly above and below it make for a narrow market with the 350 an attractive enough option for those who can't really afford a 370 and the GTR being such a car that it draws some of the market away - if the option was just about affording a GTR or comfortably affording a 370 most are going to give the GTR a long hard look.

I think the 370z looks fantastic.

Caymans are ten a penny and look rubbish. See loads driving about in that same black paint with that hideous rear end.

Don’t get me wrong, its a great drivers car but for most people who want to turn heads whilst having the option of some sporty fun when required, the zed is a heck of a choice.

If we were taking a Boxter S Spyder then....

I'd have a 370z over a German car any day. The Japanese still know how to make a real sports car for sensible money.

There is no argument to be had, the Cayman is the better car of the two but the whole point of these Z cars is to give you similar performance at a reduced cost? Which is not quite the case with this Nismo edition so maybe why it isn't selling as good as it should.

I like the Japanese ethos too but you can't say Porsche don't make real sports cars that are available for sensible money. In fact, I didn't realise how cheap second hand Caymans are! This thread has got me really looking into them now.

If anything Porsche has made the Cayman more accessible as its new price has not changed a huge amount, whereas 911's have definitely increased in price considerably.

It's only got a 4cyl engine now so probably cheaper to make than the old one :p

Very true and though I am not fond of it and probably would not buy one, it is a better all round car for it, more economy, more performance, better handling. Just sounds not so great......

I found the power delivery to be less interesting than the 6cyl. Same sort of saga to why some love the e9x m3 rather than the fxx m3 or m4.

@AlphaMale1 I bought a 981 Boxster S. Not as brilliant to drive as the Cayman (the Cayman really IS that good) but I love the top down fun.

I considered one but I'd rather the Cayman, although I've driven neither so that's said with a pinch of salt.

A review I read ages ago said the Cayman is the better sports car and the Z4 is a better daily. This seems to sit in the middle?

z4 well the e85 is a terrible daily. maybe the e89 is a good daily but it's not a good sports car.

Question for the OP, are these really as noisy as everyone suggests on the road? Cabin noise that is.

Something about this car really appeals to me but I would have to use it everyday. Concerned it would be a little too noisy to do 50 miles in a day...

my e86 was a fine daily? haven't had issues daily driving it! know plenty of e85 owners who do silly miles in them and are fine.

the e86 is a coupe so much less road noise. however it would still have the terrible lowered suspension, big alloys, etc which makes it feel like you are driving a tractor over a field.

i take it you have never driven an x5? not having to brace yourself for every pot hole like your in a plane about to do a crash landing is far better daily drive experience

I went from 350z to GTR and didn't bankrupt myself. It cost more to run but nowhere near the eye watering costs banded around on the internet.

Off the top of my head it was;

£250 brake pads
£700 brake discs
£1000 tyres
18mpg

Annual service £250-1000 depending on what service was required.
