Hi, reposting this in the correct section after not getting a good response elsewhere, sorry but some help would be appreciated :)

Well CES has happened, throwing a bunch of spanners in my thinking on a build. Very glad i didn't buy anything before xmas given all the new announcements at CES. so what should i get? what will be a good time to do a massive new build this year. my current PC is about 5 years old some components are older. still doing what i need it to do but its time for a shiny new build for 2019.

Budget £3k - £3.5k (£1-1.5k reserved for 3x2k Monitor setup , 1 ultra wide monitor or 2x2k Monitor setup) so 2k in reality for a Machine.

Main use : 3D modelling, game dev, gaming, artwork.

Things i'd like : Intel CPU, Nvidia GPU, G-sync*, 32GB ram (minimum), Samsung M.2 SSD, preferably Gigabyte components, free pack of Haribo :)

so at present is it worth waiting a few months to let the dust settle on the Bombshell from nvidia, new standards DP 1.3 HDMI 2.1 etc or whatever else is on the horizon that i have no idea about

* or free sync panels thanks Nvidia for caving

open to any thoughts or opinions, i'm looking to spend a bit, been saving for a while but now maybe feels like the right year to crack open the piggy bank.

Thanks In advance and no worries if no one knows it might just be a little too soon.

I'd say if you can wait for Ryzen 3000 that could be a good time to buy. I know you mentioned Intel as a preference, but Ryzen 3000 could offer better performance potentially. That does mean sitting tight for 4-6 months. If you need a new machine now, then for your budget you could get a very nice build. The good thing with waiting is that the GPU landscape will have likely changed a bit and settled down.

I am sure @orbitalwalsh will be along shortly to spend your £3.5K budget :D

You should be able to get an i9 9900K and 2080 with this £2K tower budget though if your pref is Intel/Nvidia.

Awesome eagerly awaiting orbitalwalsh. But remember I only have 2k for the machine.
I am Not really keen on AMD after previous absmal AMD/ATI graphics drivers...I am going back a long way though but the pain still remains more potent than being stabbed with a morgul blade. Anyway some build options of components for both a Intel and AMD would be great.

Thanks for your responses so far :)

Thanks all that gives me a good starting point. I do think I can make a few savings here though The 2TB seagate I don't really need so that will save £53. I could go for a lower gpu probably a RTX 2070 will do £700 for a GPU is bonkers imho. I'm coming from a 770 so it will be a vast upgrade and the £200 pound saving I can put into a quieter case a sea sonic PSU and a quieter CPU cooler.

The motherboard and CPU I think make sence if anything I'd like a good CPU as they are pivitol to the building and I don't plan on upgrading them ever.

I'd have to check what performance gain I'd get for 2080 Vs a 2070 is it worth a 200 price hike? I will be doing lots of 3D and game development so maybe I shouldn't rule out a 2080 just yet.

Thanks though guys for your recommendations :)

Also the SSD is it worth going for the Pro version over the EVO Or is that a waste of money?

Hi PaulW,

Interesting post! I’m also in the process of specking a new build, mainly for 3D and image editing, no gaming. I posted mine in the general hardware section...hope it’s ok to link to other posts? https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...or-autodesk-maya-2018-advice-please.18842159/

My spec is fairly similar to yours, but I was aiming for £1.5k and have pretty much managed it. Main difference is I’m looking at the RTX 2070 Windforce and 16GB RAM, not 32GB.

The SSD for the OS etc had me stumped. The 970 Evo you’re going for looks like the business though. Is nvme overkill? Would a SATA SSD be fine?

Cooling had me stumped too. I’ve read the i9 9900k can get quite hot. Do you think a fan cooler will suffice over an AIO liquid cooler?

Apologies if it’s bad practice to cross threads like this - let me know if it is!!

dark rock pro 4 or similar if your going to overclock that 9900k to 5ghz. Intel is BAD AT TDP!!! they state TDP in base form! not when using turbo boost or Overclocked. hence why Gigabyte has 10/12 phases on their boards for 5ghz overclocking , along with them and MSI releasing 16 phase boards

also push Gigabytes Gaming version over Windforce, due to 2.5 slot design and extra year UK warranty - specially when your sinking £500 plus on a part !

Amazing, thanks Orbitalwalsh! That's one impressive cooler. And noted on the Gaming OC version of RTX 2070. Good shout.

Yeah the Dark rock Pro looks pretty good. my previous build I had a noctura cooler which was great. Massive and a strange colour but a great design. It's fine to cross pollinate threads. I'd like to know what the difference really would be between a RTX 2070 Vs a RTX 2080. Is the extra £200 worth it in real terms for 3D, game dev and games? Hopefully in a few months with a bit of competition the price of the 2080 will drop. Probably overly hopeful but one should hope. I'd also like to know if Its worth getting a PRO SSD or just going with the EVO.

The case I'd probably change to a Be quiet! case for a couple of extra pounds and a Seasonic PSU. the rest of the specs seem good thanks to @orbitalwalsh and @lee32uk for your thoughts.

Can't comment on the SSD I'm afraid PaulW, I'm still dithering on that!

From what I've read, there doesn't look to be a huge leap in performance compared to the cost difference between the 2 cards. I found these reviews (gaming-focused) which may help.

I am a total noob to PC speccing though, so I'm sure someone else will be able to comment more accurately than me! This thread has helped me loads though, so thanks for that.

to be honest , doesn't seen like to much different between rtx 2070 and 2080 .

threes more of a Cuda core jump from 2080 to 2080ti being over a 1300 whilst 2080 over 2070 is 700 odd .

TMU/ROP again there isn't a huge difference unlike 2080 vs 2080ti

Yeah, not much difference, i will see happens to the pricing over the next few months. besides the price dropping hopefully is there anything else to consider waiting for over the next few months?

i still have to consider monitors for 3D and Gaming as well. i was hoping to get 3 really good 2k res ones with the extra 1k budget mostly for work but to use the middle screen for gaming with G-sync. i don't think i'd want or have the budget for using all three monitors. I would like them to be all the same though if possible.

the other option is to get just two monitors or a one super wide.

anyone have any thoughts about monitors?

prices arent going to drop , maybe older ryzen 2*** gen. Dont forget OCUK buy in $$$$ . anything can happen from now to when ever we leave EU so Sterling can fall or gain . OCUK like most shops update prices to new price when old stock is gone.

dont think the pricing of RTX will fall by them selves as they have no need to be cheaper as people are buying them - though time begs to see if someone can use Tensor cores for Mining....

as for the monitors, depends on how well you need the colour, panel type etc etc

DE
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £981.57 (includes shipping: £12.60)

yes colours are quite important, i do art, but i am sure most colours on modern monitors even crappy TN panels will be better than a 5 year old NEC 24WMGX3 Multisync Monitor, Right?

Most likely . Have to check colour coverage, specially if using Adobe programs and then brightness/nits etc

So after much deliberation i have this as a base:

Monitors : 3x Dell S2719DGF
Case: be quiet! DARK BASE 700 RGB MIDI TOWER CASE
CPU : CORE I9-9900K 3.6GHZ (COFFEE LAKE) SOCKET LGA1151
RAM : 32gb VULCAN T-FORCE 32GB (2X16GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHZ DUAL CHANNEL
GCard : GEFORCE RTX 2070 WINDFORCE 8192MB
PSU : Seasonic Focus Plus 850W 80 Plus Platinum
CPU : Fan be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU Cooler
Motherboard : Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro Intel Z390
HDD : M2 Samsung 970 EVO POLARIS 500GB M.2
WINDOWS 10 64-BIT WINDOWS 10 64-BIT
Thermal Paste

Come in at about £3045.85

Still debating the monitor choice and may change it from the Dells due to review about the bad contrast. Anyway thoughts welcome. i could cut some more corners as in drop the CPU a bit, but as i say its the one component i doubt i'll ever upgrade.
splashed out a bit in the Case but an extra £30 seemed worth it. didn't factor in Windows before eiather.

Thanks again for everyone's help :)

actually i have decided that maybe swapping out the Dark rock 4 for a be quite! Silent Loop 360 would be a nice extra. dust removal with these type of CPU fans always annoys me and as the case has a space for the radiator at the top this seems a no brainer in terms of space, air flow and cable management / efficiency. would have to check if the Ram work fit with this at the top.

i have never used a water cooled CPU radiator block before, how good are these things? worth it or not or do they not last as long as a simple fan?
