More people than ever have jobs and they are being paid more for it too!

Are there figures available that show how many hours employees are working?

Is the definition for employed still more than 14hrs a week and excluding people who have been out of work for more than 6 months from the unemployment figures?

YIPPEE!
The tax take will increase massively and the Government will be able to spend more on the Many.

Oh, no, that's right, we still have a selfish Tory Government, convinced that There is no such thing as Society :(
i guess they could squander it on translators to explain how to claim for x,y, z and pay the rent of the nice 6 bedroom house they a have given jonny straight off the boat.

Unemployment has been going down across the Western World, from the US to Scandinavia, there's nothing unusual about that. What's interesting is that, despite the growing wages, private debt is increasing at an alarming rate, mostly fueled by mortgages. So it seems to me that this "benefit" you speak of, is going deeper into red.

Do they have a similar set of data excluding mortgages?

I'd be interested in seeing what proportion of the employment figures are zero-hour contract 'jobs'...

Many of them, this was mentioned a few years ago as the Gov liked to fiddle the numbers to make it look like we are doing better when we are not.

Oh give it a rest. :p

If you really believe that a country where the State believes it should be every-bodies Mommy and Pappy would be such a wonderful place to live then perhaps you might find North Korea more to your taste.

:D

Hear hear, without immigrants taking our jobs, women and benefits we'd be a much more productive and well off society.

:)

Interesting, thank you, but I wonder what happened between Nov 17 and Nov last year?

Those figures will be out in a few months.

Some more interesting information about those numbers though, that 6% is the number of total contracts issued, it doesn't mean that's the persons only or main job. That is reported as 2.8% of the workforce.

Directly from the ONS

According to the LFS, the number of people employed on “zero-hours contracts” in their main job, during October to December 2017 was 901,000, representing 2.8% of all people in employment. This latest estimate is 4,000 lower than that for October to December 2016 (905,000 or 2.8% of people in employment).

People on “zero-hours contracts” are more likely to be young, part-time, women or in full-time education when compared with other people in employment. On average, someone on a “zero-hours contract” usually works 25.2 hours a week. Just over one-quarter of people (25.3%) on a “zero-hours contract” want more hours, with most wanting them in their current job, as opposed to a different job that offers more hours. In comparison, 7.3% of other people in employment wanted more hours.

And of those on zero hour contracts 75% are happy with the numbers of hours they are working.

Zero hours contracts in general have been demonised because of the large companies that started to abuse them. We've always had zero hour contracts, they were called bank staff. And most people who do them are semi retired, students or have other 2nd jobs.

Thankfully employment law has tightened up on their use over the last few years and the rights those workers get, but no it's certainly not ideal to have to rely on them, but then it doesn't seem to be as large a problem as the headline figures try to portray

Doubtful, if you're competing with foreigners for any of the above you're hardly productive or well off

But foreigners and immigration are to blame for most of our problems aren't they? I'm a fair guy, it's not everything they're to blame for though.

;)

So labour didn't waste money on this, is that what you are trying to tell me?

Not at all. I firmly believe that jobs should be restricted to local people. I mean, just look at London. All these people coming here from outside our city and taking jobs that really only Londoner's should have. They have the nerve to take well paying jobs in London whilst living outside London where it's usually cheaper. That just means local people living in London don't get the jobs yet have to deal with higher living costs.

TFW you're not allowed to start threads about Brexit without being banned but then you post threads about Brexit but just don't use the word.

OP is next level sensei :o

My mate's been looking for a job for a few months now. He's applied for about 60 jobs, and had less than 10 replies, and one interview. You can't just walk into a job yet.

The claim people are being paid more is almost certainly ignoring inflation.

I think your friend needs to look at his CV or the way he puts himself across. What is he applying for? There are literally places you could walk into and get a job pretty much same day.

I think some people overlook this. I've got friends who have left work and found jobs after a year or two out of work.

In fact my wife was out of work for nearly six years, then took considerable time to prepare for applications and interviews, updated her CV (had volunteered for charities, local schools, completed online courses etc) and now she's on her way to earning £50k+ in less than two years.

A lot of it though is how people use time out of work, as well as how they perform in interviews and assessments. It's not always easy. There's also social mobility issues etc to consider.

Before you whine about immigrants depriving you of female company you should take a look in the mirror pal ;)

I can't, for some reason they keep breaking when I do :(

Hi. Immigrant here.

From Africa, if you've got that on your bingo card.

I just wanted to thank England for all the jobs I've had, the benefits I've had, the tax I've evaded and the women I've porked.

I appreciate it, thanks <3
