Hey guys,

My nans front door has warped over the years and is starting to let a lot of the cold in, as well as getting damp around the frame. She wants to get it replaced with a uPVC door and has called around. But it sounds like people are trying to take advantage of her age and ripping her off. She's been quoted ~£1000 for a uPVC door and fitting. Which seems crazy money

I'd love to buy a door off Wickes and fit it for her, but I am absolutely useless at that kind of thing and would want to ensure it's done properly.

How much should I be looking at paying? And are there any companies you can recommend to come out and supply and fit a new door (preferably take away the old door too)

Thanks

Also need context for the quote, the quality and cost of a front door can vary by a mile from bog standard pvc to composite multi point locking. That quote could be quite good tbh.

The cheapest Wickes door is £450 plus two blokes half a day, plus fixings, packers, trims, disposal of old door, van, VAT, risk, overheads & profit

Let alone if it's a non standard size or she would like anything other than a white plastic ironmongery and letter box, is there any making good? Plastering etc?

Ok so sounds like it might not be too unreasonable

She just wants a bog standard door with like this, it's a standard size door. It shouldn't need any work other than the door removed and new one fitted but as I say, I'm terrible at these things so could be wrong and underestimating massively

Does the quote include removing the existing door frame and putting a suitable uPvC one in?

Whats the surrounding construction? Brick?

Yeah surrounding construction is brick.

Not sure what the quote involved exactly other than it was to fit the new door as well, so I assume they would remove the old frame as well. They came to my nans house to quote her directly. I was just worried that it was a case of trying to get money out of a vulnerable old lady like you hear of on TV, but actually sounds like they were about right

I've just paid £660 fitted for a brown upvc door and frame with euro lock if that helps. (done through some dodgy bloke that advertised on facebook. Turns out he works for safestyle and does some work on the side to earn a little extra)

Just had a front composite door and upvc rear door replaced late last year. Total cost for the uPVC door was £850, so £1k for a front door and the only piece being fitted seems pretty reasonable.

The amount of making good around the front door might be more then you think.

Also something to consider is what installer warranty/guarantee you will have with this company. We have 10 years cover on our doors, both installation and the doors.

Pleased to see this thread as we need a new front door. Assumed it would be around 1k.......when doing any home improvements I always start at 1k and work up.
Nothings cheap these days.

Do you want composite or uPVC? Our composite front door was £1.5k

I've seen one I quite like. Think it's composite, jet black with a long chrome horizontal bar for a handle. Ideally, I'd get a nest doorbell and perhaps import the nest yale smartlock to have everything fitted at the same time.

Had Crystal fit one of their latest high security uPVC front doors last year as the old one was getting a bit scruffy after 15 years. Would have been £1,500, but we were repeat customers and having the patio doors done at the same time after a break in.
