Evening all, I'm after some advice...

Several years back myself and wife bought a house and because we worked in the same area, car shared so sold her car. I put her onto my insurance as a named driver and its been that way ever since and I've built up 15yrs no claims discount.

Couple of years back, I got a company car through work which was on the companies insurance so whilst I've been driving this, I've kept myself and wife on our cars insurance as she'll use it during the week and then I'll drive it for holidays and weekends etc.

Now my company car is due to go back in September so I'll be getting my own car again which won't be on the companies insurance.

Question is, can I use my no claims discount over two cars? Can I be insured on both? What would be the best way of getting the cheapest insurance option as aware that she has now (I presume) lost her no claims discount from when she had her car several years ago

And just to throw it into the mix, the insurance renewal for our family car which we're both insured on, is due at the start of February

Thanks all in advance

Question: So your wife was the main driver on the vehicle you own yet you insured it as you being the main driver?

And no ncb can only be used on one vehicle.

Doesn't tend to matter as much if it's Husband & Wife unless the insurer is #@#!, some even discount for "Insured & Spouse" policies.

On the car we own, I'm the main driver as I was prior to the company car with her as named driver. She'll only use it 3 days a week for part time work and I'll use it evenings, weekends and holidays
Do some insurers recognise the time as a named driver for NCB?

Worth knowing, I've just done a comparison quote through comparethemarket and they asked how many years my wife has been on as a named driver - I'm wondering now if Adrian Flux could provide this info or have insurer options that use this

If you have a long proven no claims for both drivers, many insurance companies will give you 5-8 years when "re starting" a second policy but it wont be protected for the first year.

Keep us updated OP me and the wife share a car but the 7 years NCB are mine. But I want her to get her own car so I was wondering if this was some way possible.

Not many.

I *think* if you have 15trs no claims then you can split them 8/7 and use them on separate policies but I’m not completely sure on that.

You definitely can't do that.

Some insurers (tend to be those offering multicar) will give you the discount on the second vehicle if it is only the two married people on the policy (or where it is a single driver with two cars).

If you're going to have a private car each here's what to do:

In feb take out a policy in your wife's name on her car, ncd are transferrable between married couples so the ncd can go on her policy.

Search the market for an insurer that offers a competitive quote and takes into account company car experience, many do. Insure your car on that basis, the insurer may ask for a letter proving your company car experience. At the end of that year many insurers will convert the discount into genuine ncd, but even if they don't you can still enjoy the discount while you build up.genuine ncd.
