Hey all,

I am currently thinking about replacing my 8th gen civic with a new daily, I am preferential towards Civics due to how reliable they have been for me!

The FK2 Type R looks beautiful but they had a short production run! Had my eye on one since they unveiled it at the geneva motor show! Mandatory picture below!

NO HOTLINKING!

Any owners on here or anyone who has had extensive time with them? All input appreciated!

What is the build quality like on these interior wise?
Additionally is the infotainment as good as its german counterparts?
Is the steering nice and light in regular mode, but heavy in R? Additionally is the shifter "smooth" or "notchy"
Additionally anything to watch out for?

Thoughts on this as a general daily, should I be looking else where?

Thanks!

Go out and test drive is your best bet, I am big fan of the Fk2 but even bigger fan of the FK8, the type R are known for their handling and best all-rounder hot hatch you can buy.

Maintenance wise it will probably be like every other hot-hatch, check the service interval and the car will probably require high octane petrol only.
As for mpg,id expect you'll see average of 25mpg depending on your commute.

look like a spaceship in white/silver which i find cool ha, i cant imagine why you wouldnt enjoy one as a daily if your used to driving the older and guess more basic version. look wises they much nicer than that new awful thing.

Hi I joined just so I could answer this question for you as it's probably my favourite subject. My own an fn2 type r GT and I love it.I've also driven every generation in the UK of the type r civic.
Both drives in the fk2 and the fk8 a great and my God but felt like giant killers when I was driving them.
what I'd say about the fk2 is it least it still holds the same shape and size that like you how old is civics had so they don't feel over grown up as I felt like the new generation does. The latedt car for an all round car is the best but the fk2 I think maybe my next car because it's still got that sort of old skool feel that I'm used to.I'm still sticking with my fn2 cos I've got really good mods on their it's plenty fast enough for me big enough mainly used for the daily commute which puts a big smile on my face and I don't think you could ever beat the old VTech sound especially when it's in heart with more mods. So yes I'd say the fk2 is a great car the only thing I would change on it probably the exhaust because it's a bit too quiet when if you've got a car that basically says I'm fast and I don't care what anyone else thinks I do want to hear an engine growl as I'm accelerating. Good luck I'll be interesting to know if you buy one I'm hoping it's going to be more on these forums about cars I join just to talk to you about this didn't realise I suppose it's mainly about clocking computers which I would never get time to do with my family

I join the forum just to talk to you about this as I've driven every incarnation of civic type r there is. I own an fn2 type r GT and loved it it's in my blood and VTEC always would be.the fk2 is probably would be my next choice the same as you if you're going to go for it I driven the latest incarnation of the fk8 and my god it's it a great car brilliant all rounder but probably a little bit too grown up for me even though I'm Nearly 50. The great drives and almost supercar killers. Only thing I would say is the ride is a bit harsh even in their standard sport mode.the only thing I would change on fk2 if I got one would be the exhaust cause I miss the VTech sound and hearing an engine grill which you don't really get from the standard pipes. I look forward to hearing if you get the car I think they're great and probably the last generation of the old skool civic type r . Do you guys ever have a car mate I'm in South London that doesn't seem to be much going on especially for an old boy like me with a family who doesn't actually get time to play on computers now so I probably shouldn't join this website...lol

Hi mate good to see another fellow ctr owner who has it in their blood the same as me what civics did you have before did you have an EP3 and an fn2?
have a few mods on my phone so I've got the exhaust and I'm with a martelius sounds fantastic and HKS race induction.I took it round brands hatch on my god it handle great for standard suspension but I did have to replace the shock afterwards but it was 11 years old.

It's a Honda Civic not a Bugatti Veyron.

To be fair though the civic type r is probably more attractive to some little child rhino chav to get in and drive around the streets.you probably couldn't OutRun the police in a veyron around town especially with the speed bumps and little gaps.lol

I have a 66 plate FK2 in Championship White - have previously had an EP3 and an FN2, so have pretty much had a Type R for the last 15 years minus a short break when the kids were very young.

The build quality on mine is very good, but the infotainment system not so when compared to the daily Mondeo that I drive for work, the main issue is the lack of integration with my phone (S7 on Android). I think Apple users are better catered for but unfortunately I don't have access to an IPhone to test this.

The driving experience is brilliant, and a clear step up from the previous generation. The suspension is very firm and even more so in +R mode, but never crashy, steering weight feels fine in both modes. It would be good if the car offered a mode where you get the increased throttle response of +R mode, but the suspension of normal mode (due to the poor UK roads, and to keep the wife happy).

Looks are very divisive.....is definately a marmite car. Before I purchased mine I had considered a Golf R or an M140i, but the inner boy racer in me won in the end.

Gear change has a satisfying "click" and is very smooth when warmed up.

TBH, I am a bit of a fanboy, and apart from the infotainment as above I have no negative comments on the car. I am a year into ownership, just had second service completed (£280), had a couple of tyres (£150 corner for OE spec. from Black Circles). No issues to report at all.

The car puts a smile on my face every drive, thus to me that is the biggest testiment to justify the purchase.

I think you underestimate the Type R owners passion here buddy... I have just recently sold my spotless EP3 which was 16-17 years old. I treated it as if it was a Veyron and most other Type R owners would say the same ;).

Ridiculous i know but its the truth :P

My first foray into CTR ownership was a brand new Satin Silver EP3 facelift in 2004 (hence the username), kept for 8 years before px'ing for an end of run 11 plate FN2 (had limited slip diff, hids etc.). I had this approx. 2.5 years but due to having a three year old and a newborn at the time I sold up and took a massive downgrade to an Astra (not for financial reasons per se, the CTR just wasn't getting driven). The urge to get back in one took hold last year, and kids are now 5 and 8, plus the FK2 being 5 door with a decent boot actually makes it a fairly decent family sized car.

Agree - in my view whilst the CTR is not a prestige car, they do attract the enthusiast.

It is but are you telling me that it won't get the wrong Type of attention ?

Leave it in a random car park or whatever.

I mean Celica GT got keyed a bit due to big aero presumably.

Just saying.

TBF I am careful where I park the car thus there is usually a bit of pre thought before we go out as to which car we will use (have a company Mondeo as well).

I didn't mean that, I treat my car like it's priceless too but I wouldn't worry about parking it places - it's what it's for.

Cracking cars to drive, fantastically quick A to B and most fun I've had in a long time. But I could not bring myself to buy one as 51 init.

Hello, I've also joined to answer this question.

I have owned the FK2 TypeR for almost 18 month now and I use is every day.

This car will give you plenty of smiles per miles but be prepared for a few things that may get on your nerves a little.

One being the ride, if you plan to daily the car then or prepared for the suspension to get a little tiresome. It's hard but not crashy, and will become noticible on longer trips.

The car will go through the OEM recommended Continental Sport Contact 6 tyres very quickly. On new tyres,It took me only 7500 miles to get to 1.6mm.

The car runs noticeably better on Shell V power. I don't recommend anything else for this car. A full tank vets me 285ish miles.

The MPG is better around the doors than on a motorway run. 32-34 Is my average MPG, which is great considering the power output of the car.

On a motorway run the RPM sit's around 3000 at 70mph which is quite high...

If you get a car that was either registered to a private owner or dealership then some of the later cars (66/17 plates) will have a service pack on them for 5 years.

If the FK2 were a Porsche for example, given the numbers produced, the cars would go up in value. Sadly this isn't the case with this car, but is shouls be. This FK2 is without doubt a future classic (IMO).

Get the car, look after it, and you'll love every second of ownership. Accept the car for the track focused car it is and you'll be fine.

Age should never stop you buying what makes you happy.

I have 2017 FK2 as a daily TBH as a daily it's hard work, the tyres sit outboard of the wheel, so very easy to curb, front splitter is low, very hard suspension. Peanuts to run, at least 40mpg on a run. Gets lots of attention, more so than my last car (e class AMG) handles like nothing else on the road, awesome. I've had a lot of quick cars, M3 etc, and point to point I don't think much could touch it, looks are decisive, Mrs hates it
