Newbie driver about 20 zone vs 20 limit

Hi everyone,

I’m normally a careful driver and am too chicken to drive about any speed limit that I saw.

However, today when driving through a part of my town centre, I realise there’s a stretch of the road with some speed bumps but no sign of any speed limit repeaters (and I went back and checked the exact same path that I took - none) and eventually I come across a sign which says “End of 20 zone”.

Since I did not see any mention of speed limit, I assumed 30 when I turned into this stretch of road. Although I’m fairly certain that the majority of the time I’ll be around 22-23 due to the existed speed bumps, am I technically above the speed limit?

This is the first time that I come across a stretch of road with no speed limit repeaters so I’m not entirely sure how this speed limit is enforceable, since there is no way a driver would know (other than the ones who come across the path more than once) that it is a 20mph road?

So my question is, was I in the so called 20 zone? Where’s 20 speed limit is only enforceable when there is clear repeater signs?

Thanks in advance

I had a weird one the other day - sign for 20 zone, and then beneath it, a 30 limit sign

Can't remember where it was though. Just remember being very confused :P

There are signs on the joining roads stating 20.

Do you mean by the second dropped pin location? That sign I could see, however, if one was travelling from the first pin to the second, was there a sign? There’s also road works going on by the junction that I turned into that road so it’s wntirely I missed it but still wanna know

If you're unsure if you're on a 20, 30 or 40 road, look at the side roads for a clue - in this case, you can see they're all the start of a 30 zone - you can be sure you're not on a 40 due to the nature of the road, therefore must be 20 (side roads wouldn't have a 30 sign if you were already on a 30)

Thanks, but the problem is from the route and direction that I took, there was no mention of speed limit, not even a mention of a start of 30 zone (if you travel from the opposite direction then of course one would see it).

Yes, but if you look at the side roads, they all have 30 signs. That means you're not on a 30 road.

Ok so now that I reviewed the road signs, it seems like there is a road sign on the road opposite to Newts road (quite far away?) so could’ve been more careful next time.

What’s bothering me however, is the lack of speed limit repeaters tho. If a person parked right after the junction to Dought road, left and come back, are they assumed to still remember that they’re in a 20 zone? Wouldn’t a reminder in the road or a sign be more logical?

I’m not entirely sure how to but the location that I was in was DN31 1HU.

So my next question is, what’s the difference in enforcement between 20mph zone and 20 mph limits?

From what I’ve read, other than 30/60/70, all speed limits require repeater signs to be legally enforceable.

But 20mph zone is slightly different where if things like speed bumps are installed, they’re considered “self-enforceable”, and 20mph is still only legally enforceable with repeater signs unless the above condition is met?

So if a person, for some reason insist at driving 30+mph in a self enforcing 20mph zone with no repeater sign, ignoring the fact that the car will probably be knackered from all those speed bumps, can he/she be ticketed? I don’t seem to be able to find a definitive answer for this, all the literature that I see only says these zones are “self-enforcing”

Yes, it is enforceable, though given the lack of repeaters you *may* have a valid defense if on the very off chance you got caught going above it. I wouldnt count on it though.

You get 20 roads where you can't really go faster than that anyway. Then you get 20 limits on clear roads which everyone ignores.
