I want to fit an M.2 NVME drive in to a 2.5" form factor adapter and connect via SATA. (if possible)

does such an adapter exist or would I be limited to a PCI-E adapter ?

Can't imagine this exists tbh. Why go through the hassle when you could just buy a sata drive?

Any reason you want to do this? If you just have sata available then get a sata drive.

If you already have the drive then get a pci adapter. Sata is far slower than both m2 and pci so you'd losing all advantages of having the m2 drive.

I am aware how dumb it sounds when you look at what I am asking logically.
the reason is price for M.2 and SATA drive was very similar. Current mobo doesn't have m.2 slot, but I am most likely going to upgrade in next few months so would like to take advantage of NVME when I get the new board :)

I'll be honest the M.2 standard is confusing, there are a lot of different standards and they aren't made clear when buying.
Educated myself a little this morning and it seems you can have B or M key or B+M key, was not aware of this until a few hours ago.

Does make sense now actually.

Seems that the adapters do exist though. Found them. For about £20. I'd still aim. For a pci adapter if I were you to get maximum speed out of it.

The only adapter I found are either not compatible with NVME drives (bought one and the drive doesn't fit as its a different "key")
or they use the SAS style connector which isn't compatible with SATA.
