As you're all probably aware by now, I'm a filthy job stealing immigrant which means my knowledge of Englandtown is fairly limited. We've been to many places but never Poole, that place in Dorset. We have some family coming over in August and we're looking for a short lil' getaway for three nights or so, is Poole any good?

It's fairly close by, looks decent enough, but what's it like? Anyone live there / been there / wanna tell me to go to Rhyl?


EDIT: We're all grown ups (yes we are, shut up) so no kids.

Poole is a nice place, but it’s also handily located to use as a base too. The Quay is good for a stroll along, and there’s plenty of pubs and restaurants. When I was there in 2001, Sunseeker were launching a newly built top of the range yacht that a customer had ordered. Magnificent sight!

Dorset is a great place full stop. Lots to see and do and quite beautiful in places.

I’d book early though. Place gets banged out in summer.

Any more suggestions / input would be appreciated, we're n00bs at England so we're a blank canvas upon which you can paint your masterworks.

(What's Guernsey like? I see there's a day trip ferry from Poole, might be worth a day out)
 
As a base to explore Dorset it's ok but it's not really a holiday destination itself, it's just your average coastal city really.

More job stealers or they going home afterwards? :p

Poole is nice enough place, holds a special hate in my heart tho unfortunatly as theres a big training centre there i always get sent too.
 
Visit Poole, stay in Bournemouth or Weymouth would be my shout. Dorset is (with apologies to any Yorkshirefolk) God's own county, and I've already spotted my dream home in Weymouth for when the Lotto numbers come in...

Coastal city?

As has been said, it’s a handy base to explore from but not somewhere you’d want to spend more than half a day in.
 
Poole is absolutely lovely. So many wonderful places to visit and walk. Really, it’s a dog walking town more than anything else. I visited dozens and dozens of times as a child and my parents now live there. I’m going for a week long holiday there next month (well, finances are slim and my grandparents have a small flat we can use).

In terms of nightlife, bars and restaurants you can do much better.

Poole park (really good fish and chips near this)
Sandbanks
Corfe castle
Splashdown!! Love me some splashdown.
Durlston Head
Studland Bay

There is a day trip but remember that it’s three hours each way (assuming the Condor doesn’t break down) so that doesn’t give you much time in GU. What you could do is go on the early boat and have an overnight in Guernsey, returning the next day which will give you longer in Guernsey. You could even pop over on the Trident for lunch on Herm which is a place I love and go to each year for a week in October when it’s not quite so loaded with tourists.
 
I agree with @DoneADougalOnSofa suggestion.

When younger I stayed in both Weymouth and Bournemouth and visited Poole often, even had a boat ride around the area. I'd recommend Weymouth to stay at and visit Poole.

It's a good job you told me this Feek, I'd have happily booked it and wasted a day :D

Thanks for that, I'll check out the accommodation over on the island. I'm assuming driving is fine?

On Guernsey, yes. It's a lot more expensive to take a car over than just go as foot passengers though. The bus on GU is pretty good (from my limited experience), it's £1/journey. When we had a few hours to kill last year, we got on the bus, rode it all around the island and got off again where we started!
 
Bournemouth is great . If you go to poole get the short ferry to brownsea island as that's nice for a day out if weather is ok.In the summer the island feels like your in the med.
