I've got the above system with a SAPPHIRE NITRO Radeon R9 380 2G D5 with Back Plate GPU.

PSU is EVGA 750 G2.

Can the 4790k still hold its own compared to the newer CPU's? What spec would I need to be looking at for a noticeable improvement?

I've just got the Thermaltake P5 Tempered Glass edition case and a EK watercooling system. It would be nice to have a full sized motherboard (with built-in LED's) and some RAM (with built-in LED's).

depends on what your computer is used for?

Bit of gaming, bit of browsing and streaming/transcoding films via EMBY to my partners house. My next upgrade is fueled by making the P5 case look stunning but if I'm going to spend coin to achieve that I want something that will see me through the next 3 or 4 years....

Transcoding, ryzen 2600 .
Will beat intel 4 core and 6 core units . 12 thread SMT helps . Intel 8700 non K is pricy for 12 threads .

If your CPU is overclocked , at 1080p should hold its ground against ryzen in most games bar the latest AAA titles such as BFV/1 , COD , AC:O like like more threads for pathways and network coding.

Stay put on the cpu side, at least until the new Ryzen cpu's and boards launch around mid 2019. For gaming a new gpu will give you a significant performance boost.
