I'm gonna be in Belgium for 3 days and I've always been into the history of the Napoleonic war type era. Blame Bernard Cornwell and Sean Bean I guess.

Has anyone been to Waterloo? Is it worth a little bus trip out of Brussels?
It looks pretty pricey for a small museum and a staircase up the side of a hill.
Their website is absolutely shockingly bad so i really am having trouble making a decision.
The weathers probably going to be crappy too...

I know there a few military history freaks here, been there?

no Abba jokes.

I loved it personally. There's nothing like viewing the landscape in context of the battle descriptions and the sense of the scale of the whole affair.

I particularly enjoyed Hougoumont and Mont St Jean (and it's brewery!! ;)) and to be honest €21 for the Wellington Museum, The Last HQ of Napoleon, the 1815 Panorama, the Lion's Mound, the New and very excellent Visitor Centre, Hougoumont Farm and Mont St Jean Medical Museum (The brewery tour is extra) is not expensive at all in the greater scheme of things. You can also walk over to and look at the outside of La Haye Sainte but it's privately owned and they are not very welcoming of tourist gawpers.

Definitely worth a visit for any military history fan.

My, my
At Waterloo Napoleon did surrender
Oh yeah
And I have met my destiny in quite a similar way
The history book on the shelf Is always repeating itself
Waterloo
I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo
Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo
Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
Wow wow wow wow Waterloo
Finally facing my Waterloo
My, my
I tried to hold you back but you were stronger
Oh yeah
And now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo
I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo
Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo
Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
Wow wow wow wow Waterloo
Finally facing my Waterloo
So how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo
Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
Wow wow wow wow Waterloo
Finally facing my Waterloo
Huhuhuhu Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
Wow wow wow wow Waterloo
Finally facing my Waterloo
Huhuhuhu

@Diddums - I love a bit of Abba as much as the next old git, but unless you typed all that by hand from memory while wearing a shiny catsuit, no one is going to be impressed.

I typed it naked. Whilst singing Drop It Like It's Hot by that rap gentleman, Snopp Doggy Dog I believe he's called.

Went there a 17 years ago, well worth it if you are into that period of history. You can still see bullet holes in some of the buildings. We walked the route of the french up the hill and the directions the Prussians arrived from as well as the buildings it took 3 days to see all of it. I have a medal of an officer in the 95th who was above the sandpit for most of the day ( blame Bernard ) although it is no longer there, the view towards the french position is the same. the ridge behind was dug away to build a vanity hill though.

Thanks for the replies.
Can someone comment on the free shuttle bus that will take you to Hougoumont or any other location?
I'm going by bus and have at most half a day, on a Sunday too, so it opens at 10am so maybe 4h tops.
given time constraints it will just be hill, big panoramic, museum next door, possible shuttle bus somewhere but im guessing thats gonna be another 90mins ...
aww i hate flying visits.

Went today.

The lion mount was closed due to crap weather.
Our tight schedule combined with the shuttle bus being at lunch meant didn't get to go to Hougoumont farm. FML. The restaurant was closed for renovation to April....

All in all a successful visit :p

The panoramic is much cooler than I expected and the visitors center is fairly good. The 4d film was superb.
