Female genital mutilation (FGM) is increasingly being performed on babies and infants in the UK, the Victoria Derbyshire programme has been told.

FGM expert and barrister Dr Charlotte Proudman said it was "almost impossible to detect" as the girls were not in school or old enough to report it.

In one report, in Yorkshire, a victim was just one month old.

It is claimed children's services can be unsure when to intervene. Doctors are not always reporting it to the police - and even if they do, officers do not always know what to do.

"People are concerned about cultural sensitivities, worried about being branded racist, and it's being performed on a very private area," Dr Proudman said, explaining why it has taken many years for the first UK conviction to arrive.

What a time to be alive. Nah chaps, let's keep quiet about this horrific baby genital slicing that's on the rise, can't have that dreaded R word thrown at us! Let's go investigate some hate speech instead. :)

Nothing annoys me more than weak people who tip-toe around awful problems in order not to offend the followers of that certain wonderful religion. Being hesitant when it comes to such a vile issue should be an immediate sacking.

There was a conviction for this reported on last week

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-47094707

A woman who mutilated her three-year-old daughter has become the first person in the UK to be found guilty of female genital mutilation (FGM).

The 37-year-old mother from east London wept in the dock as she was convicted after a trial at the Old Bailey.

Spells and curses intended to deter police and social workers from investigating were found at the Ugandan woman's home, the trial heard.

Seems like exactly the kind of people and beliefs the left want to bring into our society with open arms, I can't wait.

In before Stockhausen, striderx etc call us racist in 3...2...1...

Quite shocking that there has only been one(?) conviction so far for this yet and estimated 100,000 cases or something?

I guess some of the same fears of causing offence and being perceived as racist etc.. that were in play when it came to grooming gangs perhaps have an impact re: prosecutions for FGM too.

Hopefully some of the publicity around the recent conviction will result in more medical professionals, school teachers etc.. being more comfortable in reporting this stuff going forwards.

At what age are Jews allowed to mutilate their children?

Can't imaging that changing anytime soon, granted some variants of FGM are far more horrific some can be more equivalent to circumcision. I suspect given that it is well established and there would obviously be a bit of a **** storm from two religious groups then it is going to take some time to change attitudes and indeed the law there.

Or it's pretty hard to get a conviction for FGM when the victim is often unwilling to name who did it, or doesn't know...

In last weeks case it was pretty obvious who did it because it resulted in an emergency visit to hospital and there were only two possibilities.

Maybe in some scenarios, but that doesn't detract from the fact there are reporting issues, it isn't like the really young kids/babies are in a position to testify anyway!

No it's not.

I agree circumcision is wrong, but FGM is beyond circumcision.

Surely that depends on the type of FGM carried out? Of course some forms of it can be brutal and far worse than male circumcision but it isn't all done in the same way AFAIK.

Rather than jumping on OMG bandwagon why not engage your brain a little and realise that it's more than just the racism aspect?

On one of the rare occasions the police actually brought this forward (think it was in Bristol), the CPS then decided not to prosecute because it was a cultural issue.

They should come down with everything they have against parents who do this to their children. I read one person had said that they needed to do it to stop "women's sexual urges overwhelming them". It's disgusting.
