Vega 56 or wait for Navi?

Navi won't be that much faster than the 56 to begin with. In fact, it may even be a hair slower.

As stated 6-9 months is a long time. I think that rules out any impulses.

IMO AMD have only released the VII to remain current. Navi clearly isn't ready and I am thinking they wouldn't have even bothered with the VII otherwise, given how relatively lame it is and how much it costs to make. I watched a video last night on Buildzoid and apparently the VII not only uses a honkingly expensive core set up but it also uses honkingly expensive power phases. That coupled with AMD's quote about "hardly making anything" and the fact they are taking all of the profits by not allowing partner cards? yeah. It's just a gesture IMO so that people don't go off them completely.

Not that there's anything really wrong with the 56 or 64. They just weren't competitively priced for the longest time. Now? and with the improvements to drivers and under volting? yeah, I really like my 64.

So I posted on here a few weeks ago about upgrading my crossfired 290X, I was just about to pull the trigger on a Vega 56, but just noticed the news about Navi definitely coming this year, possibly not that far off, which has left me in a bit of a dilemma, do I get the Vega or should I wait for Navi?

Whats your thoughts? Cheers :)

Current price of Sapphire RX VEGA 56 Pulse on OCuk seems the best deal to me. Pondering if I should or shouldn't pull the trigger.

Great air cooler, Nano PCB, if WC'd be nice small factor GPU.

Game pack is what ~£100 value at current prices of games IMO, so card ~£200.

I've got a 480 right now but considering a Vega 56. However, PSU requirements seem high... anyone reckon it would be a problem on an EVGA 650 GQ? I've got some RGBEEES, 2x SSDs, 1HDD and a R7 1700 with an AIO.

I expvwt Navi will have lower power draw.

Good PSUs are rated on the PC side not wall. I use a Cooler Master V850, ~90% efficiency, see the table from TPU review in spoiler below.

If I run f@h on CPU+GPU I see ~550W total power draw from wall, this figure includes ASUS MG279Q, ~30W at settings I use; system configuration as below.

For what it's worth I can run a V64 Nitro off a 7 year old 550w PSU just fine at 0% PL with a 100-150mv undervolt. The new 1050w I had bought for it died after 3 days, go figure.

Check my sig, same PSU running 1700Mhz+/950 OC.. no issues here.

Check my scores in the benchmark threads if you want :)

Running my Red dragon 56, Undervolted and overclocked on core (1600mhz) and memory (950mhz - Samsung yay!) R5 1600 stock, Noctua NH-D15 cooler, 2 X SSD, 2 X HDD and 4 case fans with a Seasonic M1211- Evo 620w bronze PSU, No probs whatsoever :)

Go for the 56 use it for a few months then sell it if you wanna get navi, you'd probably get close to £200 for it, so you'd basically be paying £100 for a years worth of gaming (plus an awesome 3 game bundle)

What settings are you using for your undervolt, I have the same card.

P6- 1050mv/1562mhz, P7-1070mv/1652mhz, Memory 1000mv/950mhz, Power limit +50. :)

Cheers, don't think my memory will match the OC of the Samsung as mine is Hynix but we'll see.

Are you using Wattman to OC and was the on card switch in OC mode or silent mode before you OC'd?
