I've not really had time for gaming lately and not kept up to date with the current tech, last time I was up to date with things Vega was about to be released and we had RX580's etc... but bitcoin mining had totally ruined the hardware market and prices were ridiculous, I see the prices have come down now and there's now RX590s, Radeon VII, and of course the 20XX series.

How do they stack up against one another and are AMD doing any good these days?

In terms of what people are recommending, the RX 570-580 type cards dominate the low end and the Vega 56/64 dominates the midrange for bang for buck, what with NVidia essentially forcing the GTX 1070 Ti/1080 into going end of life (and pushing their price up) to make way for the RTX 2060/2070. The previous flagship 1080 Ti was also made end of life to make way for the RTX 2080/2080 Ti and their grossly inflated prices.

Unfortunately, at the high end AMD have followed NVidia's lead with the pricing of the Radeon VII, which looks to be a shade slower than the RTX 2080 and not much cheaper. Outside of the Vega 56/64, the 7nm Navi remains the best hope of sanity returning to the graphics card market in the foreseeable future.

Another interesting development is that NVidia cards 1xxx series or later can now utilise Freesync (monitor depending).

2080 same as nearly a 2 year old 1080ti
Radeon 7 same as early a 2 year old 1080ti

2080ti overpriced failing cards with a feature only one game uses...

You haven’t missed much :p
