Location settings in Android Pie, rubbish!

Isn't it hugely annoying there's no "Battery Saving Mode" for your location settings now?

I just downloaded Dark Sky (weather app) to try and it just doesn't work with Location=off. I don't particularly want to leave my GPS+Wifi+BT on 24/7. Why did Google get rid of the Location accuracy settings? Location for 99% of activities was accurate enough just using cell towers (Battery saving mode) :( Google need to be wary of not turning into iOS here*

Do you leave your Location on 24/7 in Pie, now?

*I always thought it hilarious that upon landing in a new timezone and turning my work iphone out of airplane mode, it would find the local cell provider no problem, send me a text telling me how many £millions it'd cost per minute on the phone to my loved ones, yet absolutely insist that it couldn't work out what the local time was until I turned on my GPS and full location services

Hand't even noticed it was no longer an option to be honest, the battery life on my Pixel 2 is more than I need so I suppose I hadn't gone looking for ways to improve it like I might have with previous handsets.

Have to agree with the OP. There have been a number of changes Google have been bringing in the last few releases of Android that are genuinely making me consider taking a closer look at this year's coming iPhone.

Yeah. They seem to be losing what gives them the edge over iOS which is customisation. Like adding the weather widget in Android One which you can't remove. I mean, why would you do that? I bet they'll remove all widgets next...

To stay on track here; how much battery does leaving Location settings on actually use? My battery life is sensational with my Mi A2 Lite but I don't particular want to leave wifi and BT on 24/7...

I leave location/WIFI on all the time with my Nokia 6.1 running Pie and it doesn't even register on the usage stats. Mobile data is always off though as I only top up talk time on my peasant mode sim. :p

I'm already there on that thought for my next phone. I've just replaced my Pixel C with a 2018 iPad and iOS is actually quite capable compared to before.

Pie is actually the first OS I don't want because over the years I've begun feeling thar Google have lost their vision for android. Their apps are a mess, as is the software that runs their devices like Google Home. Everything is in a state of beta and I feel like they just don't know wtf they are going road map wise.

Making everything white hasn't helped at all.

I feel with Pie that Google copied some parts of MIUI and Emotion, unfortunately all the worst parts. We're still mainly on Marshmallow, Nougat and Oreo and are happy with all of those but Pie is making us both rethink using Android in future. My wife has been given an iPhone 6S for work and after using Pie on an Xiaomi A2 Lite for a while now prefers iOS.

Now that you can get decent storage on iPhones (admittedly at immense cost) the main reason I would avoid one has gone.

I'm just hoping my Note 4s keep going.

I just have Device Only mode on at all times. Apparently, in Pie, it's only actually on when an app makes use of it then it deactivates. You'll see the location icon in the status bar when it's in use.

Another one who is thinking of jumping ship to iOS and the iPhone. Already have an iPad Pro and its one of the few bits of tech that doesn't seemingly let me down whenever it feels like it.

My Pixel 2 has been an enormous pain in the backside since the day I got it, and I'm not convinced current iterations of Android are really improving things for the better.

I always leave location off 99.9999% of the time.
Is this the Dark Sky app you're talking about?

If it is, I've just tested it and it works fine without GPS. I just entered a location in the search and it works OK.
I'm guessing, but I think the app buys their weather information from weather providers. As most weather apps do, so they'll be plenty of alternatives out there.

I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wunderground.android.weather and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.accuweather.android
I block the ads with a firewall.

I wanted Dark Sky because of its "hyper local" settings/notifications. That's why it's so well rated and used. I was hoping it would work well enough with a location from phone masts - but Android now won't allow that.

I guess you can turn off WiFi and Bluetooth scanning... Hmn... I generally get 3-4days out of my A2 Lite so it's probably not much of an issue anyway!
