New Pump?

Hi All,

Ok, by no means a watercooling guru, so need a little help/advice.
Years ago I started out into watercooling with a Nautilus 500 (external unit). After a year or so I stripped it out, used the pump (Laing DDC) and built my own loop. I've upgraded all other parts of my loop over the years, but the pump has remained
I'm not happy with the noise. I've read that the ddc is a 'loud' pump, and as it is over 10 years old it doesn't have pwm control, so runs at full whack all the time.
I have an EK100 res top, with the rubber feet etc, have it sat on a bit of sponge all in an attempt to lower the noise, but it's just not quiet.
Should I just bite the bullet and retire it, replacing it with a younger model, the D5 vario? Has anyone switched from a ddc to d5 and can confirm a noticeable noise difference?

Thanks

yep I had a lang yrs ago .. same thing could not keep it quiet .. so went for the Phobya DC12-400..
think you can still get them I have 2 .. but they din't cost what there asking for them now .. think I paid £28 each
but yeah I hell of a lot quieter at full pelt ..

Sorry for the late reply folks.
Thanks for the info, however, I had the pump in my basket and just did a quick check for what else I needed. I lifted the pump out and it isn't particularly loud. Finally think I've figured out that it's my PSU! Fan seems to be running at full pelt constantly and is causing a bit of case vibration.
I'll be posting in PSU section shortly

My 2 different D5's couldn't handle 2 rads a cpu and graphics block. Flow was very poor. Changed to a DDC and I'm getting 5.75 litres per minute, wouldn't register under a D5. DDC is a bit whinier but head pressures higher.

What blocks and rads do you have that are so restrictive a D5 can't feed a loop layout that is pretty standard these days?

Strange because my Alphacool VPP655 (D5 Vario) can handle my dual 360mm rads, cpu and gpu blocks, big inline filter and around 10m of 12mm copper pipe-16/10mm tubing-14mm hardline tubing with no problems and excellent flow. I was running it on setting 3 but realised that setting 5 is still silent so that's what I run it at now.

Hello,

OK, ready to pull the trigger on the D5 pump, but...
Where can a D5 pump go?

So, I'm going for a D5 pump with same size res. However, it won't be able to sit on the bottom of case like my current one. The case is an Arc Midi 2, the front fans are both 140's, so the fan bracket you can buy separately won't work on those (correct me if wrong). I can move the bottom drive cage over towards the PSU to free up space and potentially move the rad to the front of the case, but think it may be very tight.

How do most people attach the D5's??

Pic of current set up (don't judge me!)

You should be able to mount the D5 in the bottom (where DDC is now) or on the front fans.

Just get the 140mm mounts if needed:

I mounted mine on the back side of front radiator since it's a dual D5 setup on a single block. Could've placed them behind if they were separate or even on the mid plate but that didn't look as nice.

Hoho, senior moment! I didn't even think to look for a 140 bracket! I always saw the 120 and just assumed that was the only one.
Thanks for the links, that now gives me the options I was after :)

Cripes chief!! This D5 is mahoosive!
So, it won't fit where my current pump is as the graphics card is in the way.
It won't fit on the upper most front fan (with the bracket) as the dvd drive cage is in the way.
So, the only place I can fit it is on top of the stoegae drive cage, and even then I've had to remove the little plastic bracket at the top just so there's enough room to fit. I'll then have to drill some holes so it can attach as I'd rather not just leave it sitting on. As usual with the world of pc's it's a bigger job than first thought. My wife will be thrilled :p
