An elderly man died while two ambulances were blockaded in by angry neighbours of a care home who held the frontline 999 vehicles captive for more than three hours in a parking row.

A couple living alongside the home which cares for 20 patients with dementia used their cars to block in the ambulances.

It was not until police were called that the paramedics were able to move.

Meanwhile, an elderly man, believed to have been aged in his 90s, passed away inside the care home as frantic attempts were made to release the barricaded ambulances.

I'm surprised its not illegal to block emergency vehicles.

The care home manager says that the patient was to ill to be moved.

I think if he had been waiting in the ambulance and died because of the neighbours blocking them in they should be done for manslaughter or something similar.

It would be nice if they could be charged with something. Maybe the costs of having two ambulances and crews off the road for three hours...

Today, the manager of the Cedarwood House care home told of ongoing battles staff were having with neighbours who objected to ambulances being parked on the road outside the premises.

However, she admitted that the patient who died would not have been able to be moved because he was too gravely ill.
It is almost impossible to take any half-baked story in the UK version of The National Enquirer seriously.

It’s a shame that “being a complete and utter ****” isn’t a crime, otherwise they’d have something to be arrested for.

Really needs some camera phone footage uploaded to youtube if you want some proper modern day shaming of the angry neighbour woman shouting at the emergency services.

People get so petty over parking, ironically it looks like if they didn't have all those bollards to stop parking on the road they could have parked out of the way.

If they had of needed to get the patient to hospital I'd of hoped that they'd see sense, if not the police smashed the windows in to gain entry (perhaps an extra one or two by accident).

Blocking/impeding emergency vehicles annoys me a lot.

I see it almost daily when on my way too or from work as I go along the main route emergency vehicles use from their base(s) to get anywhere around here where people pull out infront of a fully lit up and siren going ambulance, etc. then react usually badly causing further obstruction.

Then there are the people on my road who park in such a way at the end of the day that a fire engine would struggle to get down the road and it stops the buses, etc. getting through in the morning - they really should be prosecuted IMO.

****** thing to do, but...

The gentleman did actually pass away before they could have helped him but if they needed to respond very quickly they wouldn't have been able to

While the man who passed away was from what i have read in this thread in such a state that any help from ambulances their crew and equipment would not have been useful however that does not mean they were not needed elsewhere maybe for a young child hit by a car or someone seriously injured in the workplace, in fact from my limited knowledge on this i could pretty much guarantee they could have been used elsewhere.

Imo it should come under some form of public endangerment as you are endangering them by means of stopping their access to necessary emergency treatment.

For crimes like this, they should have their cars taken and banned from driving for least a year and banned from owing a car for least 3+ years.

Since many jobs require driving, I would allow them to drive in private land, outside of that, tough.

Hmmn,

On the face of it, this sounds pretty awful behaviour on the part of the neighbors.

However, reading a bit more into it. I am guessing that the blockage of the access road by vehicles servicing the nursing home (And not just Ambulances) is likley to be a routine even multi daily event.

This is not a through road so such blockages would represent a major PITA for the other residents on the development. particularly since many of these obstructing vehicles might well remain parked for some time (IE not just a minute or two to drop off a parcel)

Statements from the nursing home manager etc suggest that they know that this is a problem and that there have been ongoing disputes with other residents over access and parking.

Perhaps this problem could be mitigated if there was a proper parking area/lay-by provided so that vehicles servicing the nursing home are able to do so without blocking the road.

I do not know where the actual obstruction was since there are no photos of the actual confrontation. But the verges in the photo that has been provided seem to provide ample space for road widening/lay-by or other additional parking provision.

Telling people that they should be patient as regards the occasional and rare obstruction when there is an emergency is one thing. Expecting people to just grin and bear it when it is a random daily occurrence that might well prevent access to and from their homes for hours at at time is another matter all together and really is not acceptable.
