We have an abandoned car in our car park at work, been here a few months, trying to track down the owner as we need to install some emergency lights above it.

Any ideas?

Just been taxed for a year so can't be that abandoned!

It's got some tools and stuff in the boot so I suspect it's being worked on. The fact it's an E39 straight 6 with a manual gives more credence to this being someone's Acmemobile.

Going by the number on the space and my assumption this is a private car park in a building (you work in central London don't you?), then I would have thought you'd need a permit to park there, and there fore the car park owners might have that on record.
However, if you're installing lights, I'm guessing you've already been in touch with them?

We are the car park owners. It's been in that space forever and having only worked here since July I just assumed it belonged to one of our staff. Now that I need it gone I'm asking around and nobody knows who it belongs to.

Ahh I see. Presumably then it can only be someone related to your office? It's not shared with another office or anything?
Can anyone drive into the car park, or is it secure? But then, it doesn't look like it's just been dumped. It looks like someones taken the time to park it right up against that wall...in the picture, it doesn't even look like you could get out of the drivers side.

If you own the property and can't ascertain the ownership then you are probably best off approaching the local council or the police non-emergency.

I would suggest leaving a note on it first for a few days unless you can't wait that long.

EDIT: LOL is that a tax disc still on it?

Can you not approach the DVLA directly? A quick Google threw up this:

Information about another vehicle or its registered keeper
You can ask for details of another vehicle’s registered keeper. You’ll need a ‘reasonable cause’, for example:

  • finding out who was responsible for an accident
  • tracing the registered keeper of an abandoned vehicle
  • tracing the registered keeper of a vehicle parked on private land
  • giving out parking tickets
  • giving out trespass charge notices
  • tracing people responsible for driving off without paying for goods and services
  • tracing people suspected of insurance fraud

If you own the car park, perhaps you might have grounds to claim the vehicle is unrecognised and trespassing, would that apply?
Or have I misread that, and that's only applicable to actual BPA management companies?

EDIT: Scratch that. The third point seems more pertinent actually. If you can prove you own the land, that seems reasonable cause enough for the request, in my opinion.

No, it's locked off behind a roller shutter with a code. We share the car park with some residents and have 12 bays in it. I've got a few more leads I'm chasing so will wait. The electricians have left for the day anyway so I've broadcast an SOS and will see if I hear back.

Not only a tax disc but parking permits dating back to 2015.

If I don't get any bites from my email broadcast I'll have to go down this route.

Looks remarkably free of dust too. Are you sure it's never moved?

The photo doesn't show it but it's not moved in months, 100% for sure. There is quite a layer of dust, it just doesn't show in the photos.

"tracing the registered keeper of a vehicle parked on private land" would surely be good enough reason?

Yep. As above I'll pursue this avenue if it comes to it.

Rather interesting, putting my car sleuthing hat on. It's clearly got battery issues as the battery cover is loose and lying in the boot, there's a "car electrical diagnostics" kit or similar in the boot as well, and the glass in the tailgate is help open with a small block of wood so I suspect it's got starting issues at least, or other electrical gremlins.

Still, it's an e39 530i with a stick and period correct Borbet wheels. If I find the owner I might chuck them a cheeky offer of a few hundys. It's got an M54B30 which I believe is fairly easy to liven up a bit.

Heh, no requirement for a MEWP?

Nah, easily accessible with a ladder.

We found the owners. It belongs to the parents of one of The Family who've dumped it there whilst they're in America. Thanks for the heads up eh?

Ah well, crisis averted. The sparkies have left anyway so there's not much else I can do at this point. If / when they return I'll re-address.

It was a joke to stand on the car...
