Yorkshire water have sent round contractors to replace old pipes running to property as they detected a leak in them at some point last year due to age. The work itself is not chargeable to me but they are making a right mess and just dug up a flower bed we spent most of last year restoring with new plants/bulbs. Most of the plants we have planted are still dormant from winter. They seem to have just taken the default approach of getting the digger in and not paying any attention to what they are digging through.

Who's liable for the replacement of plants and other damages that we discover once they've finished this work? I've told gf while she is home before going to work to have a chat with them and get some photos of the work they are doing in case we need any proof later on down the line

anything else i can do pro-actively while the work is going on, obviously dont want to **** them off before they finish but also dont want them destroying the place :(

It should be down to them as they are on your property to reinstate or reimburse as far as I am aware but look on their website to find out or email them about your concerns.

that useful to know about contacting MP etc, i'll get in touch with YW this afternoon to start complaint process. They have just advised gf on her way out to go to work they are nearly finished. So I might get to see 1st hand what state they leave the place in before i go away for rest of the week tomorrow with work.

you are correct in regards to contractors been cheapest to win bid, they have horrible reviews online :( we've not got any receipt for all the plants and bulbs we have bought in past year or so, guess we'll just have to go off what we remember and see what pictures we have to back up any claims if needed

No one is ever going to spend time leaving a glowing review of some water company contractors so I'd take the reviews with a mountain of salt.

Yorkshire Water, hopefully you have some before pictures just put it all together and let them answer. If they refuse get someone to put it back to as it was and send them an invoice. When they don't pay them use moneyclaim online

They should have given you notice in writing for the need to access your property. Within the notice they should have included standards of work / disruption / reparation etc. and a customer services liaison contact number. If they didnt serve you with a notice of access / works I would suggest that this forms trespass and criminal damage to your property. Trespass is a civil offence, but criminal damage is not. You would be in your rights to ask for the Police to intervene.

Thanks Macca, that looks useful

They said they gave notice end of Oct/start of Nov but I was in hospital then and don't recall seeing it in the post i went through when i got out. I'll ask for proof of delivery as i doubt they have it. Neighbour is home today and says they just started on her garden now and already smashed some of the new paving they had put down last year. I assume if they've moved on to next door they have finished doing what they need too in on my property.

Been without water since around 4pm yesterday, so no clean water or use of toilet. This normally wouldn't bother me too much short term but after getting diagnosed with Crohn's last year and having surgery again in November i need a toilet. Spoke to neighbours who were home at time yesterday afternoon and the contractors left them with several trenches with leaks in them and no water to house before doing a sharp exit for the day. Even after been told they'd cut the water off they didn't care and just got in vans and went home

Called YW and explained my situation and 1st line team assured me someone would call back within the hour. No call till 2130 over 3hrs later to say a team on route. By this point i'd gone back in to town for use of facilities until mine fixed. Team turned up and spent at least an hour paddling around in these trenches that had been slowly filling up for past 6 hours before very quietly disappearing without informing either property. About to go to work feeling grubby as cant wash but need to get to work asap to use toilet :(

Resorted to filling up some jugs with rain water from water butt in garden to keep in bathroom to manually top up toilet for now. Quite glad im already booked in for hotel tonight and tomorrow for work

You should probably put in a claim for lack of water, think its 24 hours and you can start to claim

When we had a water cut of 4-5 hours one evening Anglian water dropped us 12 litres (6x 2ltr bottles) off.
We only found out the next morning unfortunately as they left it on the front doorstep and I nearly tripped over it when leaving!

If you need to wash go to the local swimming baths ;)

Water is back on now for us but not for neighbour, they had to get a plumber in as well to check internal pipes as loads of debris came through initially on 1st tap to run followed by other taps not working. Seems they got a lot more guys on site today trying to patch it all up asap. Just had a suited and booted chap visit the house to talk to gf and do another check of the water and apologies.

They've agreed to replace the broken slabs and put fresh concrete down outside. Hopefully they do a good job of it. Refunding me for this months water bill. Will just have to see if the flower bed in next few weeks springs to life or remains a patch of dirt. I wont hear end of it if those plants don't come back

I had simmilar with Gas, letter on Monday need access tuesday please call to discuss.

Called telling them cant give access at that short notice im in work... they said we are not stopping for just you (doing whole street) so you will have no gas untill you can provide access...

Had no Gas untill Friday (i get half day) they also pulled down front fence and left it in garden in half the following Monday while in work...

As stated above i think its cheapest contractors who just dont care...

I understand there is a need for it but sureley some notice and respect for peoples houses/gardens/properties would be nice.

Must be the season. We've had the gas lot knocking on our door this morning to say we need to rip up your drive/side of the house where the gas line runs into the meter, luckily my housemate was WFH today but it now means I've got to leave my bike parked out on the street until they've finished .
