Hello,

My father wants to upgrade his pc, to run Lightroom and do some photo editing quicker. He said they are 45 mega pixel raw files from the camera.

He currently has:

Intel Core i7 6700
Lenovo Skybay Motherboard
32GB DDR4 Ram (He brought this a few days ago)
Nvidia Geforce GT 730 Graphics Card
2TB HDD

I know he'll definitely need another case preferably with good airflow, and possible to use the current CPU & RAM.

So i'm assuming we'd need:

Motherboard
Graphics Card
Case
Power Supply
SSD - Larger the better. He has plenty of storage, a couple of External HDD's.

Cheap as possible somewhere around £400 - £500.

Thanks

6700 should be ok for lightroom.

I would look at upgrading his OS drive to a m2 drive and make sure his catalog and the raw files he is editing are on as fast a drive as possible.

If he is on an older version of lightroom I'm finding the latest updates of cc are faster.

Edit -

Hdd speed is most important.
I tend to edit my most recent shoot on a new catalog on my m2 drive then copy to a master catalog and backup once I've edited.
Then delete from the m2 to save space.

lightroom is mostly cpu bound. there's gpu acceleration (with lightroom cc) but i don't think that gt730 will cut the mustard.
also gpu acceleration is a bit hit-and-miss: https://photographylife.com/gpu-acceleration-in-lightroom

as mentioned by @Holst1981 , what that rig desperately needs is an ssd (nvme if possible) to use as the master/scratch drive.
then once the pic is edited, it can be saved to a bog standard hdd for mass storage. as always, if it's job critical, backup, backup, backup.

tl;dr version: get an ssd. then see how it runs.

How does an nvme drive connect to a motherboard ?

Not like a standard SSD ?

depending on the current mobo, may/may not have any. need to have a look. normally near the PCIE slots

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £499.87 (includes shipping: £9.90)

500gb 970 evo plus is newer, and same price as the 500gb 970 evo. so no brainer to get the newer, better one.
960gb corsair mp510 is great value, and has good drive endurance too (better than the 970 evo).
1tb 970 evo needs no introduction.

if you're not familiar with the corsair, review: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13438/the-corsair-force-mp510-ssd-review

[edit] personally, if the drive is going to get hammered, mp510 is probably the better choice.
drive endurance for 500gb 970 evo is 300tb, 1tb 970 is 600tb, 1tb mp510 is 1700tb!)

What kind of spec full system would be good for Lightroom upto £600

Case, gpu, cpu, psu & ssd & motherboard

I am hoping to buy his cpu to replace my i5 6400.
