Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Just plain wrong.

Quoting from where I read the new router bit.

Our current expectation is that any new tier will still use Virgin Media’s existing EuroDOCSIS 3.0 based cable platform, rather than their future Gigabit capable DOCSIS 3.1 network. Virgin seem intent to ensure that every corner of their network is ready for 3.1 before flicking the switch (although a 3.1 capable router may arrive before the new network goes live) and the Project Lightning expansion could also still be taking precedence.

Are virgin home hub 3 modems ready to go with the faster newer 3.1 technology? if so why develop new hardware specifically for it. I am happy to be set straight here as I don't know enough about it. To reply 'just plain wrong' is not helpful.

Virgin insist they own the modems so they'd be in a funny position trying to charge you for them. That doesn't rule out some sort of made up administration fee.

Considering they've just given out a load of new v6 boxes and hubs to replace old VHD+ boxes for free I don't see why it's unbelievable.

I never meant they'd charge, there is an associated cost involved though between manufacturing, logistics, old kit reclamation etc.

The bit that was quoted says they're still going to run on DOCSIS 3.0 for the near future, so no need for new hardware. There will probably be new hardware along in the near future anyway because that's just what ISPs do - they might want to get into the Wi-Fi mesh game along with BT for example.

You’ll be ok as long as you’re not adding something like 50m of cable, and you use something designed for Virgin Media - triple or quad-screened with compression connectors. Not crimped or screwed on ones.

Perhaps read what you quoted? It’ll be on the existing 3.0 network with 3.0 hardware, while new hardware is due (that lovely intel chipset big isn’t going to resolve itself and it's a hardware issue that can only be partially mitigated by software), it’s not a requirement at this stage.

Upgrade day is here.

Is that upload speed correct? I know that their upload speeds have always been a bit underwhelming, but that's pathetic.

Yup... Basic of the 'fast' business broadband. Its more than I was getting, but still.. Would have FAR preferred 100/50 to 380/9 but hey, we are where we are.
