Is it worth getting a SSD for mass storage?

I currently have a 4tb HDD which is about 3tb full of media files like photos, movies, music etc.. Its starting to slow down however and im wondering if its worth upgrading it to a 4tb SSD?

I am somewhat against this atm as for one, 4tb ssd's are very expensive, but then it seems like everything is headed towards ssd and faster storage compared with HDD's so is it worth upgrading it as it'll be more useful in the future anyway

Why would it be slowing down? Does it need a defrag?

Is it worth buying a huge ssd for that? Well, do you access all the media often enough that it would justify the cost? If you do, go for it. Personally, my photos and other media is on a server and in the case of the photos backed up to the cloud - I dont need the speed of an SSD to access any of it.

Not sure, sometimes I notice that the hard drive takes a little bit to load up and some of the files that I go to open take a few seconds.

Getting a SSD probably doesnt make it that much faster, but it will feel smoother and definitely be quieter than my current drive. I do access the media quite a lot of the time, and its regularly updated

You could get something like a High Point Rocket store, these offer multiple bays and RAID, so you could potentially use a combination of smaller / cheaper SSDs to get the capacity you need, you can get them in USB, Thunderbolt or SAS.

If the data on the drive is valuable to you might be worth considering a NAS? These are typically faster than external drives in my experience - you could get a 4 bay device and add 4 2tb HDDs for about the cost of a decent 4tb SSD. This would give you a 4TB volume if you used RAID 10 for example, and if a disk fails you can just replace it.

It's probably going to sleep. Change the settings under Power Options.

I see, thanks for all the suggestions guys!

as I was thinking, 4tb ssd for media files probably not the smartest idea :P
