So i have Virgin Media 100mb, using the Super Hub and im sick of it to be honest, its crap. So i was thinking of getting a router and popping the superhub into modem mode. I used to do this with my trust WRT54GL, loved the custom firmware so i could do all sorts. Is there a "go to" router like the WRT54GL was back in the day?

No 'go to' as such.

Your £100 isn't going to get you anything very exotic.

In what way is it 'crap'? People are usually just moaning about wireless performance which doesn't necessarily require a new router. Adding a dedicated access point can be more effective and cheaper.

Not sure on absolute best kit but Ive bought a few Netgear R6400 AC1750 routers for home use and they have been working grand, signal as good as I could expect in the properties and not needed to reboot etc in months (Bought September) from Amazon but see the price has shot up over £100 from £69.99 back then.

I've been eyeing up the linksys WRT32X at the moment, £300 router which can be had for just north of £100 if you shop around (and is styled after the 54GL!)

I'm torn between that and an ASUS DSL-68U (I'll be on VDSL fibre - whcih the Linksys doesn't support), as I really like the asus UI.

There is just a complete lack of features, no stats, it keeps freezing and dropping wireless from time to time so i have to reboot which takes a good 10minutes! Its not good at all, i actually installed my WRT54GL a few months ago for a bit of fun and it reminded me how fun and information rich that router was, oh and speedy, the superhub is horrendously slow navigating.

The L was the castrated version, and is severely WAN limited by today’s standards (35-40Mbit), certainly nowhere near capable of managing anything ‘speedy’ even overclocked. If you want something modern running a WRT build then have a look at the support list and see what fits your needs and is current.

Oh i know its slow, it was just a little bit of nostalgia installing it. I was looking at the Linksys WRT1900ACS which is compatible with OpenWRT, seems like a decent little router and hopefully an improvement over the stock superhub.
