When to upgrade from a 980ti??

Hi all

Had my 980ti for not far off 4 years now and I'm kinda getting the niggling to upgrade soon. I remember someone on here saying the same thing about upgrading regarding price and performance.

When does everyone think is the right time to upgrade from the 980ti? For a 2070 it's over 500 and 2080s are over 600 if I'm correct. Which seems mental money if you ask me. Can't believe how expensive the cards have gone. For me the performance increase you would get from the cards and the price they would cost would be soo far from being worth it.

What are peoples thoughts on best time to upgrade???

See if nVidia pull a fast one with 7nm but likely it'll still be months for the gamer versions to appear so 2080 now if you need to upgrade. 1080Ti was a good move for me from a 980Ti so also one of those 2nd hand would be good, similar to the 2080.

If you want to stay with Nvidia, then this is your best bet. The 2080s seem to have some serious quality control issues as well, so that's something you should factor in to your decision.

The 980 Ti and even the 1070 are in awkward territory to upgrade from, as there doesn't seem to be options are out there that'll offer a very significant performance increase at a reasonable price. A Radeon VII/1080 Ti/2080 are probably the minimum upgrade to really be all that noticeable. Personally I'd wait for 7 nm cards.

Upgrade when your frame rate is too low.
There's no point in upgrading if you still have a very good frame rate. Also it's stupid to wait if you're framerate is too low. The same applies to any GPU. It's simple.

Good advice. If the games you play are not taxing your current card beyond its capabilities, then save your money. There's really no sense in upgrading unless your current card is struggling.

Not according to your own signature :p

AMD Phenom II X4 940 3 GHz | 4Gb DDR2 | AMD Radeon 5770

Waiting for Ryzen 3000 & Navi

I suppose we all forgot the obvious usual question about what resolution and refresh rate the OP is driving, which would provide a good indication as to how his 980 Ti is fairing.

I still have my 980 Ti in a 2nd system and it performs extremely well in 1080 and wasn't too shabby while I had it still connected to my UW monitor but there was definitely some compromises in game settings. The 1080 Ti is mostly set to all High/Ultra in the games I play at 3440 x 1440 though I'm happy with 50-75 fps and G-Sync smoothing it all out.

1080ti is minimum for ultrawide imo

I'm on a 980Ti clocked pretty high under water (1475 Core / 8000 Mem) and game at 1440 on a 144Hz screen. I was going to to hold and see what AMD brought with Navi and perhaps nVidias move after.

Since playing Apex Legends I just don't get comfortable frames at 1440 and that's at everything on Low. Can get up to around 142 inside with a no action but the variance is massive when moving to the more demanding areas.

Decided I'd upgrade and the only real place to start was a 2080. The 2070 didn't offer the upgrade for the money IMO and because I have a GSYNC monitor I wasn't moving to AMD.

Ended up ordering a 2080 which I'm waiting to arrive. More than money than I'd like to spend on a GPU if I'm honest but there just aren't many options. No way I was ponying up over a grand on a Ti variant.... Would be over 1.2k by the time I'd gotten it under water.

I'm more than happy with my 1080 (non TI) and 3440x1440 :p.

However, now play lots of sims in VR that's making me pine for a 2080 TI!!!

I had one for a while until it was sent back. Don't really miss it vs the 1080ti but I get the desire to upgrade!

I upgraded from my 980Ti (£539.99 in July 2015) to an Msi Armor 2070 (£459) and am very happy with the performance, it is much better and cost £80 less 3 1/2 yrs later. Not bothered about the RT side as the card performs better in everything else. I get why folk are annoyed at the ray tracing but really this card is great value anyway.
