OK so we got an email yesterday from VM saying something about copyright infringment and a downloaded file or a number of files from a file sharing site , they say the file is Westworld and was downloaded Sunday , but I have not downloaded any files from any site , so I'm asking is it possible that someone from outside could be using our wireless internet to download files and it would show to VM that we did it ?.

so what do we do now ?

Thanks .

what does the email say?

does it ask for money at all . if so fake fake fake

if it doesnt ignore it, and tell virgin to do one, and if your downloading stick to private trackers

It would be good if you could share the email, so people can have a look. Obviously remove any personal info.

Has your router restarted since Sunday? If so, and you didn't download it, it's likely a case of mistaken identity and recycled IPs.

VM do email out to people who illegally download torrents so it could be real. In theory it is possible someone broke into your wireless but its extremely unlikely although the chances are a little higher if you live in a flat. More likely is another family member or friend used your wireless to download.

The only way someone is using your WiFi is if you've given them the password.

You say the account is in your wifes name? Do you have children who have computers?
It doesn't necessarily have to have been downloaded either, a kodi stick and watching a stream would trigger the same kind of infringement.

Action going forwards:
Pay for your content (whomever it may be).

Seems odd, VM block access to file-sharing sites, would almost seem like they're admitting that they're blocking doesn't work.

VM claim the file/s were downloaded between Sunday 11.30 pm and Monday 12.30 am, I was on youtube watching some Joe Rogan stuff and the Wife was watching some TV shows she had recorded , and the two kids ( boy 25 Girl 17 were asleep.
What also seems odd is that my phone's wifi was on when I woke up this morning ( it only comes on when I turn it on ) , I suppose I need to change the wifi password anyway.

I have in the past used file sharing sites , but not for ages .

Plenty of methods to circumvent WiFi passwords

If you're using decade old WEP or WPA then yeah I'd agree but I'm assuming a "decent" WPA2 and lets face it, if you went to the effort of breaking someones WiFi then you'd most likely do more than download a copy of Westworld :D

That's not correct. If WPS has been left enabled then it's insecure.

I agree, but again I'll assume the router is either the VM standard or if effort has been made to replace it then a half decent router would shut off WPS.
It's probably the second most likely outcome other than someone legitimately being on the network and just downloading or watching something they shouldn't.

I checked my BT router last night and the ******s had done something that re-enabled WPS, so I disabled it. Again.

A few things that have been posted in this thread by various people don’t quite add up.

If you can pass DPA, then VM will usually discuss (but not make any changes to) an account with you, especially if you are noted as being able to deal with the account. The policy may be different in situations like this.

VM only send notices based on 3rd party rights holders or agents acting on behalf of them stating that the IP has been logged doing xyz. They accept this notification at face value, it isn’t infallible and could be wrong, it could be based on a flawed time zone calculation (it changed recently remember).

VM’s blocking is based on court ordered blocking, they certainly do not block every single file sharing/torrent site.

It’s largely a moot point as nothing is likely to come of it anyway, but speak to the wife/kids and ask the question. Education on legitimate access to media and for example why privacy is not to be assumed and the ways it can be protected is probably a good idea.

well we turn the router off everynight ( when i go to bed )

This is generally not a good idea. The router needs to be left on to find its optimum connection speed.

Hmm... just a thought, but if you switched it off, then the IP address would be assigned to someone else at the time.
