VM and copyright infringement E-Mail.

This is generally not a good idea. The router needs to be left on to find its optimum connection speed.

Hmm... just a thought, but if you switched it off, then the IP address would be assigned to someone else at the time.

Well I would be happy for it to be left on, but the wife likes things not to be left on/plugged in.

Seems odd that they emailed you within 24 hours, usually it's a 3rd party that deals with the requests.

Well I told them yesterday to call back later today...so we will see what they have to say, thats even if they bother calling back at all .

also when i login to my ASUS DSL-AC68U and i go to enter my password it tells me the its not a secure connection ? ie the " padlock" icon has a red line through it .

I use Firefox .

That's normal. That security popup is to tell you that website connections on the internet aren't encrypted, as you're accessing your router via Firefox, as far as Firefox is concerned, it's an internet address. In reality, it's a local address for a router.

Who is downloading the 1973 film Westworld? Or is it the tv series?

What is the upshot of this letter? What is it asking?

The usual way that people end up getting these letters is with using torrent sites as your ip is exposed and you're technically uploading as well as downloading too.

If you turn your router off at night, then can you go and check your logs to see if it was active during those houses?

If the router was off then your connection wouldnt be active and VM should know this.

Well I assume it was the tv series ( i dont watch TV shows, in fact I hardy even watch TV full stop ), and as goes the router being on at that time it would have been on at that time of night just like most nights at that time .

I'm gonna have a look at the E Mail now , as shes home now .

OK so the E-Mail says its an Educational E-Mail, it also lists the file as " Westworld 2016", it goes on to say that we should take care to secure our wireless connection and use proper sites lol.

It doesnt ask for anything nor does it say anything about any action they are or are not going to take .

Also the E-Mail was from ccuk-admin@virginmedia

In the past I have used sharing sites and never heard anything from anyone...maybe set up a VPN just to be on the safe side ?....I think my 68U has a VPN setup page, or would that affect my VM Box and the other PCs using the router ?

sounds like a genuine email as I've has a few in the past when I had to resort to the bay of buccaneers to find something that could not be found elsewhere. Usually only use private sites or newsgroups.

should be from '[email protected]'

I agree that you definitely should not be turning off any modem/router overnight, as this can cause the other end to drop the speed due to suspected stability issues. Whether or not that should/would have any effect on your assigned IP with certain ISPs, I can't say. What I can say is is that the VM IP you use to access here has been the same for over a year :p

I had one of these when I was with VM. It was correct in terms of the accusations. I switched to BT when we moved house last summer and use a VPN, I've had nothing from BT.

Yeah thats pretty much what we got from them ( VM) with just a few words difference they never phoned back funny enough , I also told the wife to just ignore it and that we gonna be leaving the router and modem on over night too.

You won't get into trouble, it's more to say basically if you are doing it stop otherwise you 'may' here from some artist with a law suite if they decide to take it further. Don't think they will though the amount of money they make.
