As title, what's the consensus on these? Seems to be a Jeep Renegade chassis, the 1.4 from the 124, decent practicality, looks great (yeah yeah, it's not a BMW, but we want something with personality), decent fuel economy, and can be had pretty cheap (10k for a couple of years old with 20k-odd miles).

Go on, talk me out of it :D

Why have personality when you could have a class act?

**** the image, you either want something built (more or less) by engineers with an idea as to an objective or you want “style” with a disregard to substance, that is the difference between BMW & Fiat.

It’s cheap for a reason, BMW’s aren’t although from the attitude of the dealers, it makes you wonder why....

I don't like the Germans, imo apart from the top end stuff it's all white goods, lease, middle management soul destroying crap. This is obviously not a very popular opinion but I just couldn't bring myself to buy a German. We now drive a Mini which although is German is still a funky car.

The 500x is also funky, I quite liked it (you're not confusing this with the L are you? That things deserves to be burned in the deepest depths of hell).

No mate, not distinguishing it with the L at all, my partners 1 is a nice car for what it is, she likes the “funkiness” of the 500, her car though with its bright orange colour is to my eyes far better not least in performance terms, thankfully though after testing the 500 and getting back into her lowly 118d Sport, the difference is palpable and she’s keeping it - for now! :D

Well in that case, you can have one for Friday nights. The rest of the time it's a manly mans car for you.

Take it you don't need any room to store your **** when they aren't in a handbag? These are fairly tiny cars

...tbh they're ok, had a few as hire cars just generic white goods really. I probably prefer the looks of the Renegade but can't see them being tangibly better

We're coming from a Mini so anything larger than a loaf of bread is a bonus. We need a small car, my wife is a woman and we all know how that works.

It’s pretty much the same size as a new mini. They look ok to my eyes, but you’d be crazy not to consider a Focus or something VAG instead. Not sure they make much sense in the real world, although they are cheap!

For my sins I test drove a 500L. It was terrible, but pretty large which was a major criteria.

The 500L is an awful, horrible, hateful thing, it's probably right up there with the Multipla and Aztek in terms of appearance.

As for Ford or VAG, my wife can't stand Ford and I can't stand VAG (!) so this rules out quite a few options for us.
