Chinese social media users are voicing their outrage after the prosecution of an American who stole a thumb from a Chinese Terracotta Warrior ended in a mistrial.

Now I'm sure that we can all agree that this shouldn't have happened and he deserves some kind of punishment, but do you think that China are over-reacting? Given their state punishment history, I'm not sure I would side with them over something "severe" is needed here.

Deffo deserves punishment for that, I can see the argument that it isn’t anywhere near the severity of say an art thief targeting a valuable panting in some elaborate heist.

Oh I agree, just not sure that China's definition of 'severe' is in the same park as everyone else's

He obviously wants to ne a criminal mastermind and yhis was the easiest way for his to get his foot in the door...

Got to ask why this uncultured swine thought stealing a momento would be fine...

Well that goes without saying, but I certainly wouldn't leave a $4.5 million statue that has been loaned to me just out in the open where visitors can touch it.

You have to prepare for the idiot public these days and expect the worst.

I can't believe that a statue is worth millions, some folk have more money than sense, who buys this crap?
First of all it belongs to China and I’m pretty sure you can’t buy it from them. Secondly it’s valued at that price, that’s not the price they are selling it at lol.

Lastly just cut the guys thumb off and glue it onto the statue...job done and will serve as a notice for others not to try it as this is what will happen.

They were crafted 2,200 years old by a combined estimate 700,000 workers, they're a priceless collection of artifacts unique to China; a country with over a billion people. I love how you just hit the post reply button without even doing a modicum of research on something you have no idea about, and you get a vote.

Manufactured outrage is pretty much China's default stance in any diplomacy. They're shouting loudly to get the "don't mess with my stuff" message across.

Right. Can you imagine his outrange if someone defaced Kedge's original singed draft copy of Mein Kampf.

They have to estimate a value for insurance purposes.
There is no guarantee any form of transport will not perish destroying everything on it, or that catastrophe will befall where it is on display.
Of course you can't replace a unique item, but they are loaned on the proviso of insurance.
