Morning folks. Im looking for some shared experiences about holidaying within the UK. My wife and I are looking to do something maybe in June. Normally this would have been a holiday abroad as in previous years but this year we are working on a house refurb so are trying to save a bit of cash. I appreciate that we could spend even more money in the UK than going abroad and a comparison will be done before a decision is made but for the purposes of this thread I'm just looking for ideas.

We live in the north of Scotland and have an 18 month old child so the very south of England may be out due to the length of train journey! Looking for somewhere that would be nice to stroll around, picturesque but with a few nice pubs and eating places to visit. The typical cobbled streets image may be nice? We live in a rural area anyway so trees and fields aren't hugely important. On the other hand the beachy stuff like Blackpool could be fun or is that a total ****-hole these days?

May go down the air B&B, booking.com route for a place to stay but just looking for some nice locations to narrow it down a bit.

Any experiences of nice places you would like to share is much appreciated.

Have a look at Ribby Hall. It's north of England so not too bad in terms of journey. It's close enough to Blackpool so you can nip in for a day, which in my opinion is more than enough for that ****hole.

We were there a couple of years ago and I'd definitely go back.

I'm off to Scarborough this at the end of June/July for a week as Surrey take on Yorkshire for their cricket festival. Booked a nice AirBNB that's set me back about £300, can get a relatively cheapish train up from London. Can't wait.

Head down the East coast, there's some lovely spots in Northumbria, Alnwick Castle, Langley Castle, Craster for nice walks and seafood, you can meander for days.

Peak district? South West coast path (scrap that - too far)? Or the three peak challenge minus the challenge part, had a great few day break visiting the three mountains - obviously might need to adapt slightly for an 18 month old.

As you're aware, holidaying in the UK is expensive. Especially when you can fly to Europe for £20-30.

One place that always seems to be cheap right now is Venice, but I'd recommend taking a look at a map and traveling out of it. Some friends hired a car and went over to Slovenia for an outdoors holiday which was VERY cheap.

We usually go Centre Parcs each year as a good UK holiday, going this June. Not sure if there is one near you.

Good bit costs can certainly rack up if you do the extra activities, particularly if it's summer as they like to bump the prices up

What kind of holiday do you want?

Relaxing? Sight seeing? Adventurous? City break?

What about a holiday/caravan park? There’s one at Ayr (Craig Tara) that my sister likes taking her kids to, there’s also one at Blackpool (Martin mere)

Blackpool is nice enough along the sea front, bar the tat sellers ,etc but there’s plenty to see and do and staying in the holiday park would allow you to keep your distance a little if you find the town is a bit of a let down

I’m not going to pretend it’s the nicest or cleanest of places but I visit once or twice a year on day trips and always have a good time

We also live in a very pretty and quiet rural area and last year my and the wife decided to give blackpool a try we got the 7 attractions pass from madame Tussaud's blackpool website was around £45 each and we found a great deal for the zoo we had a blast but we had no kids for the first time in over a year.

No matter how nice or horrible a destination maybe its the people you spend your time with that will make it great or terrible.

Also from blackpool you can get a direct train to liverpool in just over an hour for some great free museums

You mention train journey. Are you constrained by needing to use public transport instead of driving ?

York is a good shout.

Center parcs will be reasonable prices if you take advantage of the little one's age and go outside of school holidays, but you're not going to get quaint pubs and cobbled streets there. With a small child all you're really going to do is the pool.

I take it the nice cities nearer to home have been done already ? I have fond memories of Stirling and Edinburgh when holidaying up that way.

Growing up we didn't have much money do 2/3rds of our holidays were in the UK, camping, never eating out. (1/3rd were driving to the continent, camping, never eating out).

The UK has done nice spots. Conk g from the N. Scotland though a lot of the best parts see around You, or you won't appreciate as much like lake District. This is compounded by the desire not to drive to the south coast which is understandable. I think getting a cheap last minute package holiday to somewhere like Crete or Menorca William give the best holiday experience at potentially lower cost.

Some of my UK highlights outside scotlabd.:
Dorset coast, the sanll sea side towns like Lyme Regis.

Cornwall, Devon and the SW coast.

Pembrokeshire coast line.

Yorkshire dales and York city.

Norfolk Broads.

Lake District is nice but is an overcrowded and not as good version of Scotland.

London is also great as far as world cities go.

North Norfolk coast is a very good shout and the weather is generally more reliable than places like the Peaks/Lake District.

Places like Wells and Cley are beautiful in the summer.
