Hi all

ive been pondering over what car to get for ages now and keep putting it off. But my old Accord is now making funny noises and with the rust issues and the fact its only worth £500 at best i feel the time has come for a change.

I would have liked a 6 cylinder petrol or something like a 3l v6 diesel bmw or audi but for the money i can spend im again into substantially older cars.

So i am resigned to being more sensible and getting something relatively new, and the Mondeo has good reviews.

I am wanting an estate, which partially limits options. For example I only found 9 petrols for sale up to £10k on autotrader, and only two of those were the 2.0l ecoboost. Im aware the 2.2 is the pick of the diesels but again there are not many around.

So my question is what to aim for. Shall i spend the whole £9k and get the mk5 in pretty standard 2.0l tdci zetec or titanium format, or shall I spend less, around £5-6k, and get the mk4 or mk4.5 model? What trim offers best value and what do i need to avoid? My mileage is around £12k a year.

Thanks.

If you went for the mk5 you want titanium not zetec.
For that money i would look at the mk4.5 and get the highest trim you can.

You should be able to find a mk4 Titanium X Sport Ecoboost for that, although as you said they're quite rare.

The 2.2 TDCI may be the quickest diesel Mondeo but it isn't particularly economical for what it is. Not worth the compromise IMO.

mk5 is a dog compared to the mk4.5

ran these 2 back to back for a combined 1/2 million miles now, and the mk4.5 is a far better car in every way shape and form

spend half the money on a nice mk4 Tit X. the 2.2 diesel is not a great deal better than the 2.0 in real world terms, best option is a mapped 2.0 tdci which will give you 190-200 bhp and 320 ft/lbs of torque which makes it more than acceptable day to day, the Tit X with the half leather option has some of the comfiest seats you will find anywhere used to regularly cover 800-1000 miles a day in mine. the windsor leather is a hens teeth option and tbh i was never a fan of the white piping.

both of mine have been fantastically reliable with the only week spot funnily enough on both cars that let me down being alternators on 2 occasions each. (if you dont cound the high pressure fuel pump failure on the mk5 at a couple of months old.

the mk4.5 is now owned by a friend of mine and has just had her first clutch and flywheel at 420k injectors turbo etc are all still original, that car is mapped and has been putting out 200 bhp for most of those 400k as well. the mk5 is marching on towards 200k quite happily with nothing yet to have broken or fallen off other than an alternator and a couple of drop links

dynamically the mk4.5 is a far better car, handles better (estate vs estate) has a bigger boot. its a draw in terms of nvh but having put some serious miles on both if i was spending my own money i'd buy a mk4.5 Tit X 2.0 and a remap. or if i wanted to spend a few extra pounds a Tit X Sport as (yes i know its subjective) its one of the best looking cars out there.

any more questions just give me a shout,

ps whatever you buy ignore fords service schedule and throw decent oil and a genuine filter at it every 10k miles

I had the 2.5T for about 2 years and couldn't fault it. Amazingly comfortable on long journeys, reasonable MPG (32 to work and 45+ on long steady drives) but it also had the power to put down. No turbo lag but the tank was rather large. Kinda miss it now.

As already mentioned, the 2.2 diesel is not very economical. I had one and struggled to get much over 40mpg on a motorway run. With grandad driving the best I ever got was 605 miles out of a full tank (specs say 70l capacity but I put 66 litres in at fill up after having driven on 0 miles remaining for a fair while) which comes out to about 41mpg. That was mostly motorway and was with me sitting at about 60-65mph with careful acceleration.

Really liked the car. Mine was a Titanium X Sport - it was comfortable and I think it looked excellent but with economy like that, where most petrols would be on par or better, I figured it wasn’t worth putting up with a diesel so I got rid. I should have got the 2.0.

There are a few engine varients in the mk4.5 tdci. Is it the 163 version i should be looking for? And are xenon headlights standard on the tit x?

163 and 140 are idenitcal mechanically and its just a mapping difference, dont reject 2.0 140s out of hand as they both map to 190-200 bhp quite happily with a remap. Xenons are NOT standard on Tit X cars

if your looking for a cheap Tit X have a look at this one

mileage is a bit high at 117k and its an ex taxi and doesnt have xenons but its also 4 1/2 grand and if it was a year newer (cant plate anything over 5 yr old as a taxi up here) i'd already have it

Thanks - there are more 140 around than 163. Cant see any in sport trim though.

Apreciate the link but i need an estate and I definitely want xenon headlights (or led but think im looking too old for that).

Id also like the larger screen not the sony unit- unless an aftermarket android based one can be fitted quite easily?

To be honest the nav on them is pretty crap anyway. You can put an Android unit in no problems but be aware you’ll lose the integration with the Convers+ display. You’ll keep steering wheel controls but things like the radio stations, track listings etc won’t show on the dash screen. Not a major issue, just looks rather bare with the stock stereo removed.

Just about to list my Skoda Superb, not an estate, but a huge boot/space. 2011, i've had it from 2012, Full Skoda history and 62k - amazeballs car as was recommended on these very forums!

Am i doing something wrong here?

Im finding a handful of 2.0 tdci tit x sports but they are all pushing £8-£9k. I can spend £9k and get a mk5 so im not spending £9k on a mk4.5.

spend half the money on a nice mk4 Tit X

This is what im trying to do. Even the mk4.5 non sport models are pushing £7-8k?

2014, no, 63k, £8.8k
2014, no, 80k, £7.8k

Out of 75 cars, only 14 titanium x and only 2 sports out of those.

I can pick up several 2015 year titanium mk5 estates all for around the £9k mark, msking these all at least £2-3k overpriced.

Looks like disappointment yet again in whats available. Every time I get wind of a potential good value used car via forum recommendations it always turns out to be bull****.

The 2litre petrol ecoboost 240 can be had for the same price as most of these diesels.

Can anyone tell me what the 240 bhp 2 litre ecoboost is like with its auto box as the only option?

That's because the mk4.5 is better than the mk5.

I have a mk4.5 2.0tdci (163ps remapped to 200) powershift titanium x estate - it's a great car. Wife has a mk4 2.0 EcoBoost titanium x sport. Personally, I find the non sport titanium x a better drive. The sport suspension is just a tad harsh.
