Ryzen 1600 or 1700 still worth it?

Morning all.

Thinking of getting a new system in the very near future.
Been looking round for systems at the moment (I know making it yourself will work out cheaper but with work and a little one I don’t have a lot of spare time to build it).
I have seen some pretty decent deals esp with Ryzen cpu and the 1600 or 1700 kept popping up. Are they worth it in the long run or just fork out the extra for the 2600(x).
Will be mainly gaming on the pc with occasional photo editing.
I am looking for something with the longest shelf life. My 2500k is getting a bit slow now.
Thanks

whats your 2500k clocked at ? 2600x is a side step up from the i5 you have , if it isnt overclocked then the upgrade is more worth it . More cores/threads for the future but clock speed is behind intels which is a factor for most games, specially at 1080p- but then thats also factoring in GPU and screen refresh rate etc etc .

1700 gives you the cores for better on paper upgrade but is slower, and you'll need good cooling to hit 4.ghz all cores and some luck!

able to hole out till beginning of June for Computex to shed light on ryzen 3000?

i5 9600k is a good upgrade for gaming at 5ghz all core clock IF you can get it at a GOOD price , £220.... and entry £120 Z390 board. If your using Adobe photoshop and Lightroom then Intel has the advantage - currently....

^^This if you're after longevity - wait until July and dip your toe in then, big gains expected and hopefully still aggressive AMD pricing if you buy on release.

You could buy a new GPU in preparation now (if you haven't done so already) - as this will still give a clocked 2500K a very healthy FPS bump, usually totally reinvigorating the system if it's replacing an ageing GPU.

Got the vega 56 a couple of months ago. And the games that cane with it made the cpu struggle. Only got a small over clock on the cpu at present. But back a while ago I had it on 4.6.
I didn’t think a big overclock would have made that kind of a difference with the old cpu I had.
And yes I have waited this long I can wait until the next gen Ryzen

It reduces the bottle-necking between the GPU/CPU - and if you can hit 4.6GHz you should see some nice gains. But the Vega 56 will already be providing that immediate gratification factor regardless of bottle-necking.

Here's a clip showing comparison of 2500K at stock and then at 4.4GHz paired with a Vega 64 - different GPU but it's the same principle/results (some games fair better than others):

Makes sense.

as yes!

You can see 4 cores and 4 threads have reached their limit now in WELL coded games !

4 core 8 threads have been given a life line by DX12 ( more so when done well) as well as giving 8 core CPUs room to stretch

The division 2 shows it off well!

Roughly speaking, you'll see an increase of 10-20 FPS going from 4c/4t i5 to 6c/12t Ryzen 2600x (this is best case with higher performing GPU - BUT cases like new World War Z see's VEGA 64 destroy a 2080ti and vega 56 beaing RTX 2080 ...)

can see that Intel does hold the lead at 4c/8t to 8c/ 16t due to IPC and clock speed

but Zen2 will hopefully change this

Roll on July - i don't think i've ever anticipated a release more, even more than Ryzen's initial debut.

I think it's because this has the potential to be the final INTEL pedestal rocker; in that the markets and even the average consumer will finally recognise Ryzen as a true 'tour de force', if it hits hype performance.

I'd still hold out till July personally, computex is June so should get the details the. For Ryzen 3000 .
And should see a LOT of i7 4 cores hit the second hand market !

How long will it take for the new Ryzen 3000 series CPUs to actually hit the shops for us to buy though, I'm thinking of holding out but if a paper release in June means actual stock in September for example, I'm not too sure?

Yes, the release dates are becoming slightly muddied :/

We all braced ourselves for a later release - Ryzen 1000 released in March, 2000 in April and Ryzen 3000 was looking like a July release but i'm getting concerned that the planned synchronised motherboard release dates may delay things. I would still be hoping August at latest if July proved impossible...

@orbitalwalsh is the Zen whisperer - cheer us up bud!

its meant to be Q3 (first week launch) but early release dates can be/are chnaged. My NDA for Ryzen 1*** stated 2 weeks later then it was actually released. But should be at Computex ! Mobo's being produced this month I believe .

I think launch will be like Intel chips, it'll go out of stock or pre-order fast and reseller will most likely inflate prices. Like coffeelake and ryzen 2000 I can only list the Week Number release a few days before most of the Heavy Hardware sites will . Certain Japanish Community rep has good standings with Videocards , and hence they get good official leaks before others :D

will still stand by the fact VRMs are improved over x470 and tad better then z390 but cant confirm this for all Vendors... though asus fans will BE very happy - though i think damage has been done to ROG brand for the last 3 board releases and UK service

@Plec come after October wont be able to spill as much beans as I can ... will say though Corsair water gear will make most by shock! did for me , attacking custom gear very hard!

@orbitalwalsh, you're a stream of 'unfiltered technical consciousness' when you post about upcoming new kit - you can sense your excitement as it's unleashed - it's great.

So, there's no way you won't accidentally drop a very unsubtle hint after October. Your mercurial subconscious will deceive you - you better start practising your Ninja edit skillz... :D

haha, dont think i'll have the time mate . 2 kids currently do very well at night now but have a feeling 3rd will be like them in their first year and be up every 2 hours at night !

also highly recommend the practice of Buying stock before you know an incoming NDA reaches your email haha :D

2700k stretches it's legs more, i5 4 core is now end of the line, recent AAA titles on DX11/12 show this, and unlike i7 , DX12 doesn't give it extra life span
T'is a shame it's coming to an end - it's had a fantastic run.

The last CPU that stomped its way through, release after release, was the q6600 G0 stepping (loved that CPU, maybe more than the 2500K) - cores of titanium - that and then the q9550. I still have mine tucked away in a box somewhere...
