afternoon all,

Decided i’m Going to spend 4/5 days in Berlin at the start of June. Currently in the early stages of planning.

Looking for info on hotels, public transport(i’ll Likely be getting the €30 7 day unlimited transport ticket on any means, (Max €37 euro for the entire city) and anything out of the obvious to go and see/visit.

I speak very basic German and will be looking to do touristy stuff. A mate has been recently so i’m getting some info from him, a girl from work is going next month, so again, I’ll get some info from her when she comes back. Will be flying from Stansted.

Cheers all!

We really enjoyed doing a war shelter tour with Berliner Unterwelten but you have to go out of the tourist area a bit and they're set times.

Also there's a bar near zoologisher garten called Gecco Bar (think it's a German chain) that does like 50 cocktails and decent beer. Also the zoo itself is good.

We also stayed in a decent conference hotel near Kurfurstendamm called hotel Steigenberg which was pretty well priced and very nice if a little corporate.

Check this thread for things to do, where to eat https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/things-to-do-and-see-in-berlin.18695970/#post-28659499

There's another thread about hotels, but that's just your preference on location and budget. We were quite far out of the centre but the public transport was great, so travelling anywhere was easy and we got a good deal at the Andels hotel. Business orientated hotel, but modern, excellent facilities and most important .....full buffet breakfast included in price ;)

Carry some cash. Was a total culture shock to go from Sweden, almost cashless society, to Berlin where no one would take my card...

Haha i stayed in the Andels hotel.... Yeah, its fine, good breakfast and Trams and a train a few seconds walk.

Nice kebab shop across the road too.

Hah! Yea, it was a damn fine breakfast spread :p We got a deal through Expedia, paid about £65 a night, but that was back in 2015 iirc

Assuming you're flying into Schoenfeld there is an office on the concourse that will sell the U-bahn travel pass thing and when we were there it had no queue both when we arrived and left Berlin - as opposed to the ticket machines at the station which were 15 deep of clueless brits trying to decipher German instructions. Make sure you have cash or mastercard though (Halifax Clarity for example) - they didn't take visa. They will inspect the card on the train into the city, but we were never checked any other time in 5 days. Being able to just walk to the platform from the street everywhere felt very different to London where there are barriers on even the smallest stations.

As already said carry some cash. The smaller places to eat (coffee shops, sandwich shops etc) really preferred cash to cards.

The card/cash thing was a slight concern when a bunch of us went last September but it wasn't an issue at all. A couple of threads were posted, this one where we asked for stuff to do and some pictures and things were here. It as a lot of fun, I'm sure you'll have a good time.

I stayed right next to checkpoint Charlie when I went, which was a good ten years ago now.
Lots of museum type places near there if you look it up.

There was a bus tour which was a good way of seeing a lot of things briefly (if anything to give you an idea) and you can probably hop on and off anyway.

You probably won't need to speak German, they're very fluent in English generally bit its always nice to at least try speak the local language a bit.

I avoided going up the TV tower for years as it looked like a tourist hell hole from the outside, but it's totally worth it.

The old stasi prison is more of a literal hell hole, but definitely worth taking the time to go and see (it's a little out of the way as it didn't officially exist at the time it was operating).

there is a good youtube video regarding kebab shops in berlin where he tells you to avoid the one all the tourists go to because of the 45 minute wait in a queue and suggests a lot of other places which are cheap and amazing. looks like best kebabs in the world.

Across the road from Berliner Unterwelten there is a park. If you follow the pathway which runs parallel to the main line you come across a Flak Tower (Humbolthain Flak). There are signs & well worth a look.

Definitely do the full Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour (might be called something else).
It does 3 different circuits of the City and there's also a walking tour thrown in.

Go on a walking tour your first or second day, will give inspiration for places to visit if stuck.

Book a Reichstag tour too, we had a funny German, they do exist!

TV tower, views incridible, brunch not worth it.

We stayed in John f Kennedy can't remember what chain, 2min walk from museum island so pretty darn central.

I found food to be meh over there, either we were unlucky or even well reviewed places were mediocre.

Make sure you visit the HB bar for huge steins and traditional german food. They had a live band and it was a right laugh. PS the pork knuckle was amazing
